Finally got my paws on more of my favorite material in the whole world, Starry Night picture jasper from central Nevada. This should be just the first of a string of beautiful new Starry Night cabochons. I'm so freakin excited lol.   Here are a few highlights of my work last week. These were all found in the same scraps bin at the San Jose gem show the prior weekend. Needles blue gem silica  Plume agate  agate floater   nodule  Boulder Opal   Also got this little crazylace slab at the SJ show. It's not the most pretty cl I've ever had but it's nice.  |

Wow! Wow! And wow! Again, lots of amazing stuff. But I'm with you on that starry night material. That is truly spectacular. On my wish list now. Great work all around.

Love the Starry Night. What do the slabs look like? Are the stars so spectacular on them?

They are all beautiful, but the starry night is special. Too bad I never see it. I did find this, though. What do you think? It was called Primordial Stone. Seems to be a jasper. This is dry.  |

Love the Starry Night Jasper the most! Others are great too! What's the origins of the Starry Night? Is it from the same area as Palomino and Disaster Peak jaspers?

Love the Starry Night. What do the slabs look like? Are the stars so spectacular on them? Thanks! The slabs do show the stars before the work starts. Thankfully they are preserved and even enhanced in the cabbing process.  Occasionally there are moons as well as seen in this broken chip cab   |

That looks quite interesting too - I wonder if the reddish area will become more pronounced or darken - depending on how the colors go I can picture a night sky over the lake scene. I can't wait to see a cab from it |

The old guy who mined it is very tight lipped about where he found it and he is a cab maker so he is hard pressed to part with any. I saw a little scrap of it in one of his bins, and a display of finished cabochons, and he first said that was all he had. It wasn't until I flashed a wad of cash at him before he admitted he had more under the counter and let me pick through a bucket. From talking to him, apparently the seam material has quite a bit of vertical fractures which break into one to two inch pieces which I see as perfect cabbers but he feels they are not really commercially viable. He also doesn't sell any of his rough for the same reason. |

The starry night is gorgeous! How was the boulder opal? Messy and troublesome as expected  Seriously though it wasn't too bad. The natural edges shaped piece is spoon shaped so all I did to it was round over the face and polish it as best I can in between all the soft spots. Maybe someone will see it and buy it to drill and hang it or something else? Here's a side view of the shape...  |

The old guy who mined it is very tight lipped about where he found it... Aren't they all? Not sure if it is the same miner, since the guy I came across claiming to be the miner wasn't very old (then again, my own age may have warped my perspective on that). Could be that its not under claim and a couple/few folks know the location? I've heard McDermitt area (north, south, east and west of). That makes sense to me, as it strongly resembles McDermitt/Chicken Track, Desert Picture, Red/Green McDermitt, Arroyo and other playa bedded jaspers from that area. Some of the old Desert Picture jasper looks exactly like Starry Night (right down to the colors, hills, texture and stars), so I speculate somewhere nearer to that. Whatever, you founds some great pieces. Nice to be able to pick from a bucket of that. |
