I just got back from a three day rock hunt in the U.P. I didn't find tons of rocks, but it was a good trip. Here's a video. It's just the first day. There will be more to come.

Next time I get up around the lakes I will absolutely , positively , take a few hours off from fishing and do some hounding. Last time up we got into the big Smallmouth and didn't think about agates until half way home and was looking at the beaches off and on all day long , DUHHHHH !

I love the home-made spoon picker-upper! There are a lot of agate hunters up there and they all have some sort of rock scoop. Mine works well.

I could have used one of those scoops yesterday. A sharper one for getting smaller rocks from driveway.
Looking forward to more videos from your hunt.

Looks like great beach walking weather. How were the bugs? I am heading to the UP tonight. Will be up there for a week so might end up on Lake Superior at some point.
Edit: Nice looking agate at the 11 minute mark. Score.

Nice video Rob. I had to watch it a second time, the soothing sound of the water coming onto the beach did me in, fell asleep right in my office chair.

No problem with flies (or any other bugs) on the beach at those temps. In the woods the mosquitos were thick, but Deep Woods Off does the trick with them.

The beach in the video is pretty remote. I saw two guys there when I first arrived, but they weren't rock hunting. I didn't see anyone else for the six hours I was there. On the three other beaches I was at, I saw between 5 and 10 people, I'd say. They almost all carry scoops though, so they're at least somewhat serious. When the weather gets nicer, there will be more people. The place is known for agate hunting.

I'm wondering if your "fossil" was coral. I've found that much of that stuff "tinks" like glass. Nice vid.

Just got a message from someone on Drummond Island saying the small biting gnats are really bad there right now. Those are the worst for us because spray does not help much. If we get bored we might be heading to Pictured Rocks area mid week. chuck

I'm not sure if it works on all flies or just some. I can't remember the name of it.

I have had some success with the thermacell units but that gets pricey. Those flies are usually only a problem on the island for 2 weeks each year sometime between May and early July. Do you get those in Alpena too with those woods behind you? Chuck

I'm not sure if it works on all flies or just some. I can't remember the name of it. There's a product on the market called Permethrin and its a game changer - big time. Apparently its been around for quite a while but I just discovered it this past summer – a year too late. If I had known about this stuff two years ago I could have avoided Lyme disease. I am a fly fishing guide and am always outside so this stuff is a Godsend. Its a derivative of the chrysanthemum flower and once dry is 100% non-toxic. You apply it to your outdoor clothes, let it air dry and it remains effective for 42 day or 6 clothes washings, whichever comes first. It won't protect your skin, but ticks usually get on your clothes before finding your skin and that = dead tick! Works on any annoying insect that comes in contact with your clothes. Its made by Sawyers. Here are some links: Permethrin at Sawyer’s website: sawyer.com/products/permethrin-insect-repellent-treatment/A couple short YouTube videos: 1. 2. The last video shows a tick dying on a pair of pants. The stuff works really well, if they land on you (including mosquitoes), they die! You can buy it almost anywhere – Cabela’s, Bass Pro, even Walmart. forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/post/1046923

Chuck Lots of bugs locally, but only mosquitoes at our house, but they’re here all season.
