Started working this last night. I wanted to cab it but there's an awful lot going on and now I'm wondering if I shouldn't just tumble this one. The problem is that it's about 1/2-3/4" thick and if I cab it I'll probably end up losing quite a bit of the pattern-especially down the one side. Anyway, taking opinions/suggestions if anyone wants to chime in! Thanks for looking. Here's what I started with and where it is at the moment...

How close is it to having a good shine? You would have more control over the pattern if you kept slowly cabbing it than if you tumble.

Not close at all, that's just work that I've done so far with the dremel. My biggest concern is losing most of the pattern on the edge facing you (not the top) in the picture if I grind it down thin enough to be a cab. I suppose it wouldn't be the end of the world if I did lose it- but it's such a pretty specimen... I'm still on the fence.

I would remove material from the back, at an angle so you're removing from the top as shown in your pic. Leave the top and sides alone except to round a little and polish.

What Rockoonz suggested is a good work around. Another alternative would be to leave it thick and drill a hole in the top to make it a bead.

Right now it's just sitting on my workbench until I can make up my mind. I keep getting it wet so I can see the patterns better and trying to make up my mind. It's driving me a little nuts. Ok, a little MORE nuts.

This reminds me of a bracelet I purchased last year. I thought the stones were agate and jasper. They might have been Tee Pee Agates. Square stones, double holes, threaded on elastic. I did wire wraps with a couple. The stones were about 3/4" square.

Only photo I have of the bracelet. Will try to get a photo of some of the remaining pendants I made from it.

So I decided to cab this, here's where I am so far. More work to go but I think it will turn out...

The last design is really nice because the shape emphasizes the color and design.

Spent about another hour on this yesterday. I know, an hour may seem like a lot to those who cab all of the time- but I'm using a dremel. It will probably take a good half hour to get rid of the unevenness on the top. Anyway, it's almost ready for the tumbler and if you compare it to the above photo I don't think I'm losing too much of the pattern. I sharpened the image just a tiny bit to show the lines remaining. Thanks for looking.

That's looking VERY fine, regardless of any irregularity under the camera lens.
