I usually make one trip a year to Flint Ridge. It is over 3 1/2 hours away, but it is practically the only place in Ohio to collect rock other than limestone. You can either swing heavy iron tools and crack pieces out of a solid ledge (brutally hard work), or pick through the loose rock in the pits and car-sized mounds of tailings. I did some of both, looking for large, solid pieces to slab. I wound up with 99lbs of quality rock in about 4 hours. Total price, including the admission fee to the pits, was $55.50. Better yet, you park your vehicle right next to the pit, so I only had to haul my rock about 15 yards!
