I wonder... Is it completely too late to even think about going?

It's never too late - until it's over. Getting a room anywhere close by might be a stretch now, though.
Day trips are even fun if you're into driving home at night. We know people who've done that. Probably a 2-1/2 hour drive from where you are.

neural the Best Western in Erhenberg is sold out, but you might be able to find something in that shit-hole, Blythe.

If it's 2.5 hours roughly, we can make that work as a day trip thing. Besides, the less time we spend there, the less money we part with, right?

We've stayed in the Super 8 in Blythe and it was very, very clean. In fact, we booked there again for this year. It's only a few miles west of the CA/AZ border and about 25 minutes from Desert Gardens. It's a very easy drive.

If aDave says it's clean, then it's clean.
I have an aversion to Blythe is all. aDave is also correct in that the Best Western hikes their prices way up during Quartzite. We booked really early and it's still costing us more. Vince and I decided to suck it up and pay it though.

Granted, this was two years ago. melhill1659 also stayed there at the Super 8, and her only complaint was having to lug pounds of rocks into her room on the second floor. Normally, a Super 8 would not be on my list of places to stay. But, we were very pleasantly surprised. That said, we'll see you in Blythe when you look to eat dinner.

Plan on toting Friday night dinner with us (thinking fried chicken from Fry's and some potate wedges) that we can nuke. Saturday night is the BB Q and Sunday at some point we head on back north. Disaster averted!

If it's 2.5 hours roughly, we can make that work as a day trip thing. Besides, the less time we spend there, the less money we part with, right? Don't forget to plan to visit Tony's BBQ on Saturday night the weekend of the PowWow show. For that you'd probably want to get a hotel unless driving home after dark doesn't phase you. As alluded to here in the thread Blythe IS a shithole town in general and there are a lot of flea-bit hotels you'd want to stay away from. BUT there are also a decent number of serviceable hotel options. We stayed at the Regency Inn and Suites maybe four years ago and it was pretty decent and inexpensive. The Super-8 and Best Western both have very good customer ratings with a decent amount of reviews given. If we go this year we would probably try to stay at the Best Western because we have grown to like BW and we have a membership with them and get a 10% off discount. Also on the eastern side of town is a newer Hampton Inn that has 4.5 customer rating but I remember it to be ungodly expensive when we last checked it a few years ago.

We stay in Blythe as it's a short drive to Quartzsite. When we travel, we usually stay in Choice Hotels. The prices are right and we know what to expect. We have stayed at Comfort Suites and Clarion Inn in Blythe and both were satisfactory for what we needed. We're staying at the Clarion again. We don't plan on hitting the town in Blythe.......

What day and time specifically should we target, if we only have one day to be there?

What day and time specifically should we target, if we only have one day to be there? Well that's a bit subjective and depends on your goals. If I was focused on getting the best high quality slabs that I can find with only one day to shop I would hit the PowWow show on Thursday the 16th. A lot of vendors are still setting up on Wednesday and by Friday the crowds descend on it for the weekend. That being said there are such a massive amount of slab vendors that there will be plenty of quality material available for the duration of the show. If your goal is good quantities of quality rough rock then Desert Gardens show is pretty steady but get there as early in January as you can - again before the crowds descend on the area for the PowWow show. If your goal is meeting a bunch of good folks from RTH and the lapidary/rockhound community in general then come on Saturday the 18th and stick around for Tony's BBQ at Desert Gardens.

Bill orrum Glad to hear you are on the Mends and getting Better! We plan on leaving around the 3rd and getting to Quartzsite B-10 RV Park around the 6th maybe sooner. We plan on staying in AZ 2 months and heading back early March. I have had a LONG LIST of things to do and with the Holidays it has been quite a challenge getting everything done! Look fwd to seeing everybody. I looked at the Cell PH Coverage Map we have sprint and they are worthless Looks like T-MOBILE is the way to go.
