So I just changed the blade on my unit, to a 6" x.017x.5" notched diamond blade from Kingsley North. When I went to cut another guitar pick, the blade spun freely up until it touched the slab. It came to a dead stop. After fiddling with it, I tried a piece of balsa wood. It came to a dead stop as soon as it touched the piece. The blade is spinning in the right direction. Is this a problem with the flanges? Is there a way to tighten the nut even more?

The blade fits snugly on the arbor, but I believe the flanges are too loose, and for the life of me, I can't figure out how to tighten it any more than I have.

Try putting a washer between the nut and outside flange .

I'll give that a shot, am I using too thin a blade? It looks to be identical to the one that was on it when I bought the unit.

See if the pulley is tight on the arbor or motor

That was the very first thing I checked. Grinding wheel spins just fine, tested that with a piece of scrap (which promptly fractured into a dozen pieces).

There is no reason why you can not shim something between the blade and the flange washer (are you sure you have it on correctly (concavity on the side toward the blade on both sides). Are you using a shim/bushing that is keeping your flange washer out from the blade. The flange washers must push against the blade on both sides to keep it straight and to keep it from spinning independent of the arbor rotation. Check this out. It will be something easy. Trace everything back to see where the slippage is. Is the arbor spinning?. Is the flange washer spinning? is the blade spinning but not in synch with the arbor. Can you make the blade slip when you hold the arbor/belt or what have you (not with motor running please)?

Saw works just fine after I put on a thin washer. My best guess is either the flanges need replaced, I didn't tighten the nut enough, or the blade is just a bit thinner than the old one. The blade spun freely without moving the arbor, the arbor spun without moving the blade. Now I just have to get a guard to keep the oil from spraying a fine mist into my face (and basement). Thanks for all the help! By the way, is there an easy way to take the nut off the arbor? It's a bear.

Glad the washer worked , blade must be thinner . Try cleaning the threads with a wire brush before taking the nut off , might help .
