Awesome coral. Sure does look like Indonesian coral. Indonesian coral Chuck Thanks! And that's what I thought bc I spent alot of time looking online for similar coral and seems that every pic I came across that looked very similar was all labeled as indonesian coral. Hope it wasnt just a one off lucky find bc would love to be able to get hands on more of it!

Everytime I go hounding there I appreciate that river more and more! Seems to be an amazing variety of rocks to find and around just about every bend there is another gravel bar to pick through.

Why would there be Indo coral in a Texas River?
I didn't say anything, but agree it looked like that to me too.

I've scoured the internet since I found it but havent come up with anything found in texas that even remotely resembles it. Happy to have found it regardless but hoping that more can be found.

Maybe someone just threw it in there. That's what many have said about some of the finds on my land.
I will be very happy if you find another.

Maybe someone just threw it in there. That's what many have said about some of the finds on my land. I will be very happy if you find another. Someone will eventually find several hundred pounds of rocks from all over the world on my cabin property in the middle of the woods on an island in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I am sure they will have no idea where they originally came from. I take all of my tumbling rejects, crappy end cuts and less then lapidary quality rocks up there to get rid of them. I have one pile that is at least 200 pounds that is at the entrance of my driveway that people pick through as they are walking by. The low grade petoskey stones are always gone quick. When I first got into this hobby I was scattering my scraps at a small gravel pit on the island and am sure that confused many folks that picked rocks there. Chuck

I don't know much - or anything - about fossils but I was intrigued by your piece (and the Indonesian coral drifting theory ), so I fired up Google and did a little internet searching as well. I found a photo of a piece of coral that's supposed to be from western Texas on this page (nr. 24): www.jsg.utexas.edu/npl/outreach/adopt-a-fossil/ This is a direct link to just the photo of the western Texas coral: www.jsg.utexas.edu/npl/files/Coral-UT_14181_A__a4.jpgI think it looks very similar to the piece you found - but better take a look yourself. I also found an interesting article with pictures about two kinds of Montastraea coral species; Great Star coral and Boulder Star coral: fossillady.wordpress.com/tag/montastrea-fossil/ . Both species show some similarities with your piece, and according to the article they both still can be found on the banks off the Texas coast, among other places.

I have some Florida coral that looks about the same, coral colonies are all similar for the most part, the difference is how well defined it is in the fossil replacement.
