I was just archiving some photos and realized I never posted pictures of the rocks I submitted for the 2019 world rock tumbling contest. These were my top 6 favorites but I had to narrow it down to 5 so the smallest one did not get sent in. I tried 4 different polishing methods before deciding which I liked best. Tried 14 days in the rotary with A/O, 14 days in rotary with T/O, 4 days in the loto with A/O and 4 days in the loto with T/O. Chuck

Well, I think they are winners. Thanks. It's a bit of a crap shoot. There have been years I did not think I had a chance and have won or placed and then the years I really think I have a shot I have not even placed. It is always a struggle trying to decide what the judges will be looking for. Will they be looking for the best shine and zero flaws on rocks that might not have good color or pattern or will they be looking for the rocks with the best color and pattern ignoring mediocre shine and minor flaws. I don't think you can get a better wet shine on Rhodo than that. They're beautiful!
What method did you decide worked best for the polish?

I kept a couple from the tin oxide rotary that I thought could not be improved and the rest were from the loto using A/O Chuck

These are really beautiful and I am amazed at how much SHINE you got on those pieces! Mine were able to get a bit of polish, but nothing like this!

The end shine was certainly better then I expected from this material. The judges have sheets with several categories that they judge on a point scale and the highest total points is how they place the winners. Shine, shape, pattern, color, flaws etc. I'll see if I can dig up the criteria. Chuck

Great tumble on a tricky one. And fine color/patterns. Thanks jamesp. I was really happy with the results of the finished stones. Not as happy with the results of the contest, LOL. Looking forward to hearing what the rocks are for next year. You should join in on the fun (misery loves company). Chuck

I hope to crank back up soon and try the glass system on softer rocks. Or tricky ones like this rhodonite. Never seen such a fine finish on rhodonite.
