Nice! I just joined this club. I haven't made it to the shop yet, it's a 70 min drive from my house. I signed up for the carving class coming this spring.
Good luck with your tumble.

I did the contest in 2018, that material still gives me nightmares. So much undercutting! I still have a couple pieces of it left and will not tumble it anymore...LOL. This looks like pretty cool material, may have to sign up and give it a go this year.

I just submitted my application and I'm so excited to tumble this Jasper! Online picture of Lavic look so pretty.
Last year I signed up too late and didn't ave enough time to get my Rhodonite done, so I signed up right away this year. Also, to be honest, my finished Rhodonite was not NEAR the amazing quality of the winners. Those were stunning!

How is everybody doing with their stones? I have had a bit of trouble. First off, most of mine are too big for my little 3-pounder, so I broke some up... which was not easy! I had a series of ridiculous and stupid problems, such as... lost the nut that goes on top of the barrel (I had it earlier in the day), and worst of all, lost the machine itself! Had the grits, ceramic pieces, etc... Lortone MIA. Somebody had moved it. Finally located it under some old boots. One of the feet was MIA, so had to improvise. Etc, etc. Ground off the rough edges. Finally got it rolling. Checked it after a few days... hmmm. Too much spalling and chipping. Added more dried coarse slurry and some smaller material and now she is rolling along nicely instead of crashing. Doesn't seem to be building up any gas so I'll leave it now for a week or so and hopefully see better result when I open it up again.

Finally got rid of the pinholes, I hope. Been in 220 for about a week. Will check them later this week.

ooh, yes, I see some pinholes, but I'm far away from worrying about them yet. No, actually, since I worry about everything, maybe I'll start worrying about them now.

Well, it was a nice day, so I took a look. The good news is, the small (non-contest) rocks I tossed in for small fill are doing great. The Lavic... um. A couple are coming along nicely. The rest are getting rounder, but seem to have more imperfections than when I put them in. No new spalling or chipping, so I seemed to have solved that problem anyway. Back in they go, a scoop more grit, along with a couple more quartz smalls I picked up beside the road.

How are the contest rocks going for people?
After a month and a half in coarse grit, I am FINALLY seeing some hope in these rocks! I have to keep replacing the "filler" rocks I been putting in as they are ready for the next stage, but the contest rocks have been so... slow. I am figuring another 3 weeks or so, and they might be ready to move along.
Don't know if I am ever going to get rid of all these pits, though.
How long have people had theirs in coarse, how long in medium?

I have some really crappy rough in my opinion. Not to knock the group offering the contest- but the winner will likely just be the luckiest one with the good rough. As others have said, despite pits and cracks etc, my pieces are all mostly dull colored brown. Nothing much exciting.
Regardless, it is a contest and I'm gonna see what happens with a shorter tumble cycle myself as I haven't been home long enough (or had the rocks long enough) to do what I want. I have maybe 3 pieces I'm ok with. I'll have to send 2 in I don't like much. Don't have much hope but we will see.
