Well my husband said what do you want for your birthday and I said a rock tumbler. He is still a little shocked. I want to do Petoskey stones first and maybe some granite. Most of my stones are under 2.5 inches. A few are larger. It’s been super fantastic year for Petoskey stones here in Michigan. I have a chance to buy a used UV 10 (has a blue stripe on the bucket) for $60 or I can get a new Lot O Tumble. I don’t know which one to pick. Any advice for me. I just started rock picking/polishing this year. I would be running the tumbler in our basement.

I have a Lot-O and after one exchange due to a faulty part, I am liking it so far. I can't compare it with UV10 but I chose it because it was supposed to be quieter of the two.

Jugglerguy has commented in one of his videos that all the recent contest winners have been using lotos I have also had the same question.

I also chose the Lot O because it was said to be so much more quiet. I got the Twin, but my next purchase will be a single barrel model just to see the difference. I like the rubber barrel and being able to run it virtually in the room next to my living room. After watching videos before my purchase, I must say I like the action of the UV vibes more, however. My Lot O had to be modified for it to work right for my needs, but this is not the case for everyone mind you. I'm special You can see my first stones I polished here: forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/89510/close-polish

Petoskey stones are very hard to tumble, so I wouldn’t recommend starting with them. Granite also doesn’t tumble very well. You’ll be able to get a shine on it, but it undercuts, meaning that some minerals wear away faster than others. There are plenty of Michigan beach rocks that tumble well, but those are not two I would start with.
I don’t have any experience with the UV-10, but I love my Lot-O. One of the reasons I chose it was because it is smaller. I start all of my rocks in rotary tumblers and it takes forever to get enough done to load the Lot-O. With a tumbler twice the size, it would take twice the time to get enough rocks ready to fill it.

Thanks for all the advice. I guess I should have said I really only want to polish Petoskeys right now. I have made two separate one day trips to Petoskey from Jackson this fall. 4 hrs there. 4 hrs back. Ahhh...retirement is great. I have buckets full of them and have been making some jewelry and gifts with them. Hand polishing takes forever. I think I will get the Lot O Tumbler. Seems to be the choice of so many of you. Hoping it will cut down on the first steps of polishing. Most of mine are already smooth from Lake Michigan. Thanks again. Jugglerguy, I just realized you are Rob from Michigan Rocks. I watch all your videos and recommend your hand polish Petoskey video many times.

Well, I was telling my husband about your responses and he said “Well I guess I better tell you I ordered the Lot O Tumbler and a bag of starter grit and ceramic media from the Rock Shed Website this morning for your birthday. “ I am excited for it to arrive. He is the best husband.

Sounds like a great partner. I think you will at least be satisfied with it, if not overjoyed. The softer stones will need much more care than the instructions that come with the machine, but you are in good hands here. Start up a thread in Rock Tumbling asking how best to polish petoskey, or feel free to search around a bit and discover
