Our new resident, down on our lower native meadow -a native gopher tortoise ! I haven't actually seen him yet- but the burrow is the right shape & he's digging it to beat the band !
Fresh diggings this morning, after the rain.
WELCOME !

Northern Lightning brings Air Force, National Guard, Marine and Navy units from Arizona, Florida, Minnesota, Ohio and Virginia together at Volk Field, northwest of the Wisconsin Dells. From August 7 to August 18, they’ll participate in combat readiness exercises involving more than 60 aircraft and 1,000 service members. In addition, representatives from allied countries are coming to observe the exercises. The flight zone includes Brown, Calumet, Dodge, Fond du Lac, Green Lake, Outagamie, Portage, Sheboygan, Waupaca, Winnebago and Wood counties. The busiest times are between 8:30 in the morning and 5:30 in the evening. I heard and “watched” some exercises yesterday. Sorry for the photo quality. My laptop cannot do screen shots.

Some storms went through the other day. I just missed some interesting down drafts, but think this is a pretty photo.

Didn't have a camera with me so this is not my photo. At least four times in the past month or so at the campground we are in along the SC coast an eastern diamondback rattlesnake has been spotted late in the afternoon hunting along the edge of the woods and the mowed grass behind several camp sites. I've seen one twice and it looks to be over five feet long. Be careful out there.

woodman. Better snatch that beautiful plum before the squirrels find it. They got all our fruit.

Those are awesome Rick. I agree with Tela, the handle on the opalite and the opalite itself are killer. That last one looks like it has the right balance and belongs in someones collection
Is the blade held solely by the wrapping or do you swell the wood to get it to fit, dunno if that's the right term or method....

Had to get away before work yesterday. Hartman Creek State Park. Allen Lake, Waupaca County, WI. Only other people in this area were a family fishing. The pond next to the lake. Heard a Loon. Spent many minutes watching this spring bubble. What I think is Cardinal Lobelia. Will share more photos of my short trip later.

Chad, I notch out the handle using a small hacksaw. I use a two-part epoxy with a liberal amount of cedar sawdust to set the knife blade and fill up any spots that need it. When it's all set up I totally clean and sand where the blade and wood are joined together then wrap with artificial sinew. I want my knife to last and not come apart. I've had a few people that spent a lot of money on knives show them to me that were disapointed that the blade was coming loose. That's what can happen if they use real sinew and indian epoxy (bees wax, tree resin, plant material/small fibers and charcoal). As our friend Ed mohs once said "dop them up". Tela, my earlier photos were shot at an angle and didn't show accurate proportions so here's a better shot of the opalite and cedar knife. It is presold to a very good friend of mine here in Columbia who owns the only rock shop in our area. I showed him an opalite point a few years ago and he had to have it. I traded that point to him for 4-5 bifurcated authentic ones that he had bought in a collection. After a few years in his office, that point sprouted wings and flew away. He is going to take better care of his opalite knife. jasoninsd - "they will cut"

The one I got for my grandson has a prized place in his collection.

Saturday at work the grandmother of our musical performer was giving these to employees and others. Beautiful Passion Flowers. I could not resist the opportunity to take some photos of mine. Taken with my DSLR on Macro setting. Added the macro lens for these.

"Daina's Delight" Sarracenia Pitcher plant.
Starting to send up some nice fall pitchers.
Day length might be making them think the season is coming along- but the heat sure makes me think it's high summer !

Recently found about a place called Artist Point, near Mt. Baker in the North Cascades. This place is off the charts beautiful and it's fairly to easy to access, though some stretches of the road in and out are not for the faint of heart. We figured out later the haze we were seeing was from a bad wildfire ongoing in Canada. I won't pretend like my pictures are doing any justice to the beauty. You can look up this area and see what others have been able to capture with better conditions, but after looking again, the haze kind of gave everything a neat photoshop effect that kind of blends the colors in the back and foreground some.
It is Artist Point after all....

Basalt Column flow? This was wild to see up so high, I need to learn more of the geology of this area.
