This has been bugging me for quite some time now. My QT-66 takes about 3 seconds for a single rotation, which equates to 20 rpms. This seems way to slow and thought it should be more like 28 or so rpms. For those of you that own this machine, how many rpms are you getting out of your QT-66 and is there something possibly wrong with mine? I bought it brand new from therockshed.
I’m getting the same speed with empty and full barrels btw.

Move the motor to tighten the belt. Also make sure your bushings have been oiled. If any adjustment doesn't solve your problem, then you could have a bad motor. You'll have to go from there.

Yea, after I posted this I thought to check the belt and it’s ok. I have oiled the bearings as well so I don’t know. Seems odd being a new machine, but I guess anything is possible. I also was under the impression that a spare belt was supposed to come with the machine, but I didn’t receive any.

Did you oil the motor itself?

Did you oil the motor itself? No I haven’t. I’m not even sure where or how. It’s only been used maybe a month or so since purchase. I’ve had it shut down for a while now due to cold weather. I was getting the same speed when new. Not like it has slowed down any. I just thought it should be a little faster.

Next time you’re out there can you grab motor nameplate rpms and both pulley sizes?

If you talk to the folks at Lortone, they'll tell you the motor does not need to be oiled. If your tumbler is moving that slow after a belt adjustment, then a call to your vendor is in order, especially if the tumbler is only one month old. Motors can sometimes be bad out of the gate. You might have to spend some time on the phone, but Lortone's service is usually pretty good. Between Lortone and your vendor, I'd think this could be taken care of in pretty short order. Whoever you deal with, 20 RPMS is way to slow. Something needs to be changed.

Funny you bring this topic up today rocksinnj as my wife has a new QT66 that has been running for 4 days. I was wondering what the rpm was so I checked it several hours ago and figured it was rotating at two seconds per revolution or 30 revolutions per minute. I wasn't sure if that was fast or slow so I came on here to find out and saw this thread.
Before we started the tumbler for the first time I oiled the bearings just to ensure they had oil. The instructions said that there was no oiling required for the motor, which I found a little strange so I didn't attempt to oil it.

RocksInNJ - just FYI I just now timed my QT66 at 28 rpms which seems to be good because I'm hearing lots of action from inside.

Mine was 31 rpm when I got it 3 years ago. still sounds good so I haven't checked it since then. Is yours a 220 volt motor ?

Have you counted for a minute? About 3 seconds per round could be a little off one way or another. That's actually a great point. I focused more on the number than the way the RPMs was obtained. RocksInNJ, when I count RPMs, I time for a full minute, and I use a countdown timer on a clock app on my smartphone. It makes it easy with the timer, as the alarm sounds when one minute has expired, so I don't have to worry about looking at a second hand on a watch. Give this a try and see if that number changes. I just reread your OP, and I see you got the tumbler from the Rock Shed. If you are still excessively slow after rechecking, give Shawn a call for some guidance. He'll definitely take care of you.

You can also get a strobe light tachometer app on your phone.

Are you putting a piece of tape on there, or line from a permanent marker so you can clearly see the rotations ?

Are you putting a piece of tape on there, or line from a permanent marker so you can clearly see the rotations ? Don't know if you were asking me or not, but the black and white paper label on the lid works for me. I just count the times the letter "T" in "Tumbling Barrel" passes 12 o'clock. That letter is in the white section, right next to the black section, so it's easy to follow. If I didn't still have the label, any way of marking a spot will work.

Hey guys, I just want to say thank you all so much for the replies, suggestions and help. It turned out that I was indeed timing it without an actual timer and for only one rotation.
I to use the T on the label for a guideline at the 12 O clock position, but this time set my phone for a one minute timer. Turns out I’m actually getting like 30-31 rpms, so all is good. I kinda feel stupid for not thinking of this myself, but in any case am very happy that all is well. Thanks again. I really appreciate it. Everyone here is always so friendly and helpful.
I hope you all have a wonderful and safe New Years!

That's the way it is sometimes. Folks came in here looking for some information and this thread offered up info that they were questioning. That's a positive for this thread. I can guarantee you that I've asked far more stupid questions in the past. You don't have a lock on that. That's not meant to be a criticism at all. This thread was well worth it for the information that was garnered.

Thanks for the positive thoughts guys. My grandfather always said, there’s no such thing as a stupid question, as long as you’ve learned something from it.
