I try to plan for the worse and hope for the best. After AM farm chores, did initial prep of my car. We received about 2.5" of snow overnight. Knew I had to get the snow off car before the rains came. My car is a 2010 Subaru Forester. All Weather Package. New, Goodyear, Weather Ready tires in 10/19. It does have some "features" that require snow be removed in certain areas before an ice storm. I must clean the area by wiper blades. Learned the hard way on that. Snow turned to ice and prevented the wiper arms from moving. I always clean the passenger side window and mirror. Quick distraction. When I was going to barn for AM chores, saw a new snow plow/dump truck that was huge. The plow blade was extremely wide. Like 1 1/3 lanes on the two lane highway I live on. It made a return trip in the West lane. Back to car. Rear window, wiper blade, wiper fluid outlet and rear hatch. All must be cleared. My severe weather, self compiled kit is in rear area of car. Drivers side. I have to go to town this AM before the storm hits. When I return, tarps will be attached to the windshield, drivers side window, passenger window and rear window. I attach them with some very strong magnets I have. Other than prepping the car, I also had 4 legged family members who needed some extra things done for them. Ensured horse tank was at least 3/4 full. Dog dish was filled with water. Both are heated. Extra food and treats for all. I am hoping my extra work is for naught and do not receive the predicted ice storm.

fernwood I'm not sure if you already know (you probly do) but your car has a heated windshield under the wiper blades. Can't remember if there is a dedicated switch or if it turns on when full defrost mode is engaged.
A trick a lot of people use around here is to just leave the wiper arms up, so they can't stick to the glass. Looks weird but works I think, never tried it.
Good luck through the storm!

Wiper arms up, works.........mentioned this in a previous thread.........along with a 50/50 ratio of window washer and de-icing fluid in the washer fluid dispenser. I've owned three Subies.....all WRX/STI's.........two had the "winter packages" factory installed........heated front seats, side mirrors, implanted front and rear windshield defrost systems.......there were dash control switches for the seats and rear window. The mirrors and front windshield were controlled by the dash defrost system.........not sure about the Forester, but most Subies didn't deviate much from the factory add-ons btw 2008 to 2015, after that, only minor changes were made to the option packages based on model preferences.........IMO, Subie sedan and smaller SUV's were/are one of the most reliable and practical "winter" vehicles ever made, for the bang-for-the buck aspect......!

Hope you didn't get all that yuck, Beth! Here's a trick Vince uses for the side mirrors -- he puts a knit beanie hat over the mirrors at night (like the one EricD is wearing) and it keeps the snow/ice off of them. Just plucks them off in the morning before he has to leave. Works a treat!

good tutorial be safe I don’t live in snow But I have been in some particularly nasty situations concerning snow, moving, & driving. One occasion was I was moving from Denver to Florida It was December28th. I picked up the 24-foot truck during a blizzard and loaded that truck that day to leave early the next morning. The next morning the door were iced shut. I had left the driver side widow down about a quarter of the way. Mistake!!! The dashboard was iced over. After getting things somewhat thawed out. We left on our merry way. It was about 7 in the morning during Friday rush hour traffic. Heading south bound on I-25 out of Denver Uuughhhhh!! Cars were throwing mud & slush up on my windshield. The window coolant was frozen. So I had to pull over quite a few times and hand clean the window. I was even under the truck with my Bic lighter trying to thaw the line. It worked somewhat. That just one occurrence while moving cross country during blizzard conditions . Anyway once we got to Colorado Springs the snow stopped. And the rest of the ride to Florida was groovy….mostly This was the song I thought of while driving out of Denver

pizzano Yes, I have all the heaters/deicers on my Subie. They must be getting tired and old from all the use they get. Do not work near as fast as they used to. I do position the wiper blades up before attaching the tarps. My biggest problem is inability to reach across windshield with a scraper. I use a broom to get snow off. Cannot reach ends of wiper blades either. mohs am sure that was not a good moving experience. One time I was driving from one side of WI to the other. Was fine when I left. About 1.5 hrs into the trip encountered roads with about 3" of slush. Traffic was moving very slow on the 4 lane road. Vehicles in left lane were splashing the slush onto windshields of those in the right lane. It was very cold. Even with defrosters on full blast, the slush was freezing. I had to stop many times to clear it off, as did others. After about 3 hours in that mess, I finally got to an area that had not received much snow/ice. The final 2 hours were much better. At the time I had a 2002 Forester with the all weather package.

Ah the joys of living where it snows.
I was -18 below Saturday Morning then warmed up Sunday, then a nice 27 yesterday with snow.
Was working in the garage last night walked outside and a good 2 inches has already fallen. About 4 -5 inches total.
More coming
Fleet farm makes really long scrapers. I bought one for the runner. Works great.

I have a 4' scraper from Fleet. Just not enough strength to use it.
Dunno what I will find when I go outside today. Am guessing a couple inches of snow and maybe some more ice.
-18? Wow. At least temps have been above 0 by me lately.

It's supposed to get up to the mid 70's to 80 the rest of this week here in Houston. Unfortunately the Houston Crud has set in; Foggy, misty, overcast, no sun for several days.

My self collected seeds are ready for Spring planting. Am guessing some plants have reseeded on their own, as usual.

I like to raise the wiper blades before a snow or freezing rain event, makes it easier to get them cleaned off. Subaru get to park in a nice dry garage but my Ford truck lives outside! Cats will not go out in the rain or cold!

Do they sell you block heaters or is it just a option in the US? Woke to 39 below zero this morning it was a shock on the system stepping outside, like a kick in the face lol. Even with my truck plugged in the cold killed the battery. Expecting it to be below 40 tonight and with a wind chill 48 maybe even 50? Going to run a battery charger the next few nights just to get it started in this cold.

Don't tell them about Oregon weather... Yeah, between downpours and snowflakes, there are volcanoes and tsunamis - plus the whole state is rotating clockwise! As gov. Tom said, best to visit, but not stay Those little windshield tarps that strap between the rearview mirrors also are handy if ice is expected.
