Thought I already posted this but can't find it so will do over. I was given 5 pounds of tripoli but not sure what to do with it. I have a rotary and Lot O. I am planning on tumbling some glass and my friend said the tripoli could be used as a prepolish. Any thoughts?

Your friend is correct. Tripoli should be considered a prepolish.
Figure it is around 700 to 800 grit.
I personally like it, but I'm never in a hurry for a batch of rocks to be finished. Sometimes I have mixed it with 500 grit and other times I have used it alone between the 500 and 1000 steps if I'm really going for a world class polish. Seemed to help with some obsidian runs. So it makes sense that it would do well with glass.
If you just want to use it up and not waste it, I would treat it as a prepolish and work it in to your runs as you see fit. Sure can't hurt anything.
And welcome to the forum.

I will be using tripoli in a Lot O tumbler. Wondering how much to use as it is fairly soft as I understand. I did try some in a rotary tumbler with some clear quartz before polish and the results were disappointing. Odd as my previous batch turned out great. Now that I have the Lot O I will put the quartz in there. Thanks.

I’ve mostly seen Tripoli used for polishing metal followed up by jeweler’s rouge.

I had a customer that tumbled a lot of agate. His preferred polish was tripoli. I have used it on agates with good success.
