Got to get out yesterday with one of my sons and hound for half a day- finally! It's been probably 6 weeks and I REALLY needed to get out. 50 degrees and not much wind, a little muddy but at least most of the snow was gone. Thought I'd share some pictures. I wanted to show how much of a hike we did. It's hard to tell how steep this was and we were way out there- the easy part was going down, coming up with rocks in a backpack was another story. I could tell how long it's been by how out of shape I am! Here's where we were- And then when we got to the top of the canyon I turned around to show how far we still had to go. You have to zoom in to see my vehicle on the road! Thanks for looking.

miket What, no McDonalds or Circle K. - too much openness for a city slicker. Nice pics and glad you were able to get out.

There’s a road? Lol yeah I would’ve been dead before I even got to the hill. Oh yeah, there's a road- most times it's even passable! You don't really want to be out there when it rains, however. Gumbo. We actually have found several Fairburns in the ruts- not sure too many people check there. Either that or people driving when it's super muddy stir them up.

Beautiful location. Did you find any rocks? Yes ma'am, it's really beautiful out there. We found some bubblegums, wood, prairie agates and I found one decent Fairburn.

I actually grew up in a city in Colorado and moved here to go to college and we stayed. It took some getting used to, but I like it. Peaceful. And yes, we have a Mcdonalds. The best part is the place we usually go to hunt Fairburns is only about 40 miles, if we head into South Dakota (which we're going to do more this Summer), it's less than two hours.

looks like a beautiful place to hunt rocks It really is. So many rocks, super peaceful. We didn't see one other person or vehicle out there. There is so much of an area to search, too- even though it's been hunted for years we always seem to find Fairburns, or at least other beautiful stones to rescue bring home.

Sorry, but it looks really cold. Brrrr Nah, it wasn't bad. Like I said, 50 degrees, no wind. It would have been nice if the sun were out- but I was already sweating when we finally made it back to the vehicle!

Way better than working! I once went to the North Carolina mountains in the winter when there was snow on the ground. Saw a copperhead curled up in the only small patch of ground in the sun that had no snow.

miket , when you go into SD, are you more toward Fairburn, or do you go up 40 41 in the direction of Red Shirt? Just asking as we took 40 41 to go the back way into the Badlands. Red Shirt Table overlook was pretty awesome. ETA: Typo'd the highway number.

Red Shirt Table overlook was pretty awesome. More toward Fairburn, but we have gone to Railroad Buttes once which is about 40 miles North of Red Shirt on 40. A far piece from where I live, but we want to go back. Lots of Fairburns have been pulled out of Railroad Buttes, and there's a HUGE area to search. Plus it's a very beautiful place. Maybe next time we'll travel that way instead and check it out, thanks!

Ended up overshooting our turn to go to Badlands by 20 miles. With no real landmarks, we didn't know we missed it until we ran into 18. Our turn was not labled the way it was on the map. Here's a panoramic photo from the overlook (not meaning to hijack):
