Hi and welcome from NW Nebraska! I'd be willing to help however I can, but I haven't hunted much in the rapid city area. Only once at Railroad Buttes. However, you can always go to Fairburn SD- they're still pulling them out of there. PM me and I'll be glad to give you some tips on where to go. I can also tell you some spots for teepees and if you can make a trip to the Oglala National Grasslands you can find fairburns there as well. Like I said, I'll be glad to assist however I can. 😀

Thanks Fossilman! I'm originally from Oregon. What a beautiful State! I've seen some rockhounds post from around here. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that at least one is about sharing the love! Finding Fairburns is a whole lot more complex and difficult than I'd imagined when starting this journey! Whether I link with some local kind soul or not, I'll be out hounding for sure! My next move is to have my girlfriend drop me and my dog off on the Cheyenne River. The Badlands eventually deposit the agates into the adjacent river and they move southeast along it. Benjamin (my dog) and I can take a nice hike down a few miles in search of agates, jasper, and smiles! I'm just planted here in Oregon(wife is from here), hung my hat in ND and Montana too... All great hounding states for sure... Did a bit of hounding in SD, nothing to brag about though...LOL

Here's the tutorial for setting up Cloudinary to post pictures. Follow the directions exactly as written (it takes a little time) and then you'll be able to post pics in no time.

Thanks Hummingbirdstones! Wow, I knew something was up. I'm no tech wizard, but I can normally post pics!! I'll run this tutorial today from the office and post pics. I actually found several agates over the weekend. No Fairburns still.

One other thing, Dom- People have told me they've found nice Fairburns all over Rapid City in landscaping rocks so keep your eyes open. Places like Popeye's Chicken, the airport, anywhere. I've never really looked that way- that's just me- but it happens all the time.

miketI’ve plucked some nice landscape rocks in the past mostly in Utah. I want to go landscape rockhounding in Minnesota. I’ll bet the lakers are plentiful there. Don’t tell MsAli she’ll get them all before we can get there.

MsAli Wow amazing photos! I always wanted to visit Minnesota for the agates but I can see there is so much more to see there. That person is a fantastic photographer. What a great eye! Not a great photo but this was in my front yard through my kitchen window. She’s a big girl. Probably 600 lbs. I was 8’ above ground level when I took the photo.

Isn't he awesome? I love his photos. He is way up north though and it's a different world up there.
Moose always amaze me. It is incredible how big they actually are!

I'm almost able to post pics. Ask I have left to do is add my upload preset. I tried from my phone, but will have to do it from my office computer tomorrow. Boy, you got to jump through some hoops to post pics here! Anyway, thanks for pushing me in the right direction! And thanks for the ideas for hitting gravel beds! Right now though, I'll be headed back to the Railroad Buttes. Through trial and error, I feel like I've found where I am able to pull decent agates out regularly. And my thought is that I'll eventually find a Fairburn. Also, thanks for the pics!!! Nice frozen Nebraska agates! And nice Moose! I've only seen one in the wild and it was in Eastern Idaho.

Yeah, Cloudinary is a pain in the patootie to set up, but once you've got it, it's the easiest thing in the world.
Fingers crossed for your successful setup!
