I’ve been tumbling a few months and figuring out the Mohs scale. My problem is trying to figure out what the names of the rocks are that I get from friends. I have been fairly lucky that I haven’t chewed some into mud. Are there some complete lists of rocks that can be tumbled?

Greetings from South Carolina. There's a few good sources on the web, if you just search for "Rock Tumbling Rough" you'll quickly get a very good idea of what vendors are selling for tumbling. Here's a link though, with an example of what's out there that's suitable for tumbling. Be sure you shop around for the best price, service and quality. Rock Tumbler Website

the answer to your question is no. lapidary rocks are named after a location so just a few miles down the road (agate or Jasper) has a new name (marketing name). To a geologist it is agate or jasper so if you lump them all together is all agate tumbles and all jasper tumbles. but then you run into those pesky marketing names where jasper xxx is really rhyolite that just won't tumble well. there is a little paper back book from in the UP that uses drawings of various typical rocks from your area and you can use it to ID a lot of the common rocks. can't remember the name but I am sure the rock shop in Houghton MI has one.
