I currently have my rocks sorted mostly by size. I have separated the granite, most of the petrified/agatized wood, and the rocks i pick up at work(agates i think) in to their own containers. I was wondering how does everyone else sort their rocks? by location? by material? by size? by color? by date? "by God man, who sorts rocks?" by texture? "by my nostr.. oh you said 'sort' my bad"? or by some mad method I have yet to ponder?

Location and (type and size)
Stuff I hounded on my WA trips is in its own container, regardless of what it is.
Stuff I've collected locally is first sorted by type, then if I plan to tumble it the types are further divided by size.

I guess mine are separated by if I want to slab or tumble them. I usually hunt the same areas, so location isn't too much of an issue. Other than that I have wood in bags, Fairburns separated out in bags, and a HUGE tub of I'll get to these someday. Oh and a few piles of ones I picked up that I need to go through, some in my backpack from the last trip and several piles in the back of my vehicle where I had to dump out my backpack to use it again. I'm super organized.

Laugh it up, but suspenders and a fanny pack on your side are premier rockhounding equipment. Keep yer pants up better than a belt from all the bending over. Empty the fanny pack into the hiking bag to keep going and keep the load off your back.

I have set up mine by cutting size, tumbling size. Then those sorted by personally collected and purchased material. Then each of those sorted into what I want to tumble/ cut next. Also have bins for tumble material that needs pre grinding done, partially tumbled rejects, and rocks I've cut already. Oh and then I have milk crates just for collected pet wood since theres an abundance of it where I collect. Problem is my failure to keep up with this sorting system. Which results In buckets and containers of all sizes full of rocks .
So I've been planning on just sorting tumble vs cutting and collected vs purchased. Slabs sorted with purchased vs collected. Rejects added to my landscaping

Self collected stuff goes into feed sacks and is labeled. Cutters and tumble are kept separate. After cutting and tumbling I may keep a few pieces labeled as trip souvenirs, most goes into the general collection, sorted by type and what I plan to do with it.

Slabs by color. Rocks by size, and if they are intended for cabbing, or intarsia frames.

whyofquartz When I am being good, I sort them into lots by rock type. I may have several purchases of say sodalite in a container together. Some big some small but one place to rule them all. Except when I get behind and when someone wants some of xxx then it does not get put back because it is late ..... So I always have sorting to do. but in theory it mostly orderly with some escapees

I keep separate containers in the truck and sort the rocks when I bring each bucket back to the truck. When I get home I place each material in separate 55 gallon drums which are in rows. I keep lids on the drums, but drilled a quarter inch hole in the bottom of each one in case water gets in. I still have messy rows of rocks in the open that I'm slowly relocating into drums.
For certain materials that I have large quantities of I take an 8 foot length of mesh field fence and make a cylinder out of it about 2 and a half feet diameter by 42 inches high. I stand it up and fill it with bulk rock. I makes interesting rock pillars scattered throughout my orchard. People comment how cool it looks. Last year a couple did their wedding photos among the pillars and fruit trees. I thought it was silly until I saw how good the photos turned out.
