A week ago my wife tried a few patterns for masks that were available online, and one from a quilting group at the University of Washington medical center that she belongs to. An accomplished seamstress and quilter, she made a couple of prototypes with modifications before settling on these masks with ties. They're pleated so that they wrap well around the face and chin.
She's pretty fast and can do about 5 per hour. This batch is on its way to her sister's daughter, an MD who runs an urgent care clinic in Albuquerque. Like many others, the clinic needs masks.
I got involved, too, because the design calls for an internal, bendable nose wire, so I made up a bunch of these 3-inch wires with little globs of hot glue on the ends. Made them from 3 22-gauge wires.
If anyone is interested in a pattern/plan for these, essentially the same mask can be made from plans here:

That's awesome, Gary. Wish I had a sewing machine. I'd make some of these up for my clients.

How wonderful. Some of the fabric/craft stores by me are giving away mask kits. Locals are sewing the masks. The kits meet the revised specs of the hospitals. These masks are not the same as the approved COVID 19 masks, but all that some hospitals have. Most local hospitals only had enough approved masks to issue one to every front line employee. Over time, the masks lose their effectiveness (according to what I was told by a manager at a local hospital).
The masks that so many are sewing now are greatly appreciated by many.

Good for you two! You make a great team for a great cause.
I don't have a machine, but my daughter does. I'll have to talk to her about this.

That's wonderful! The quilting club (guild? idk?) here is currently making masks for our hospital. They are using a special pattern designed to fit over an N95, so that the "disposable" N95s can be used more than once. The goal is to prevent contamination of the N95s. I have a sewing machine, but I'm not very good at it and they'd turn out poorly.

I wear my cloth mask over my N95, too. spiritstone's link below suggests that, with care, we might be able to extend the life of an N95 mask for weeks or maybe even months.
