Hiya from Rochester NY, I’ve been lingering on the boards for a few months and have already become familiar with a few of you frequent posters *cough* jamesp *cough*. My grandfather was an avid rock hound for years as well as collecting fossils and coins and bottles and civil war buttons, until realizing how thin he was spread and focusing on the buttons. But before that he had built a collection of what I can only assume is at least a somewhat impressive pile of rocks and minerals. Anyway, I was the only grandchild to inherit the collecting bug (digging bottle dumps and sorting coin rolls while my peers played football and made YouTube videos) and have since pulled back to focus mostly on coins and rocks and minerals, but inherited most of the coins and rocks when he passed a few years back. I’ve only recently started to get back into the rocks after selfishly buying my girlfriend a small rotary tumbler for Christmas. Turns out she doesn’t have to patience to mohs test the rocks and really figure stuff out so I’ve pretty much taken over. Have been experimenting with what came with the tumbler and just made my first therockshed purchase of some grit and ceramic to actually get things rolling. First coarse loads in with a mix of stuff we picked up, the rough that came with the tumbler, and some pieces I could identify as worth tumbling from pops collection (the loads on the soft end of the mohs scale for tumbling, I know I should’ve started with harder but eh, I like a challenge). But I’m excited to learn from y’all and share some of pops collection and my personal additions, especially once I do some necessary upgrading of my setup! PS I know you guys love pictures and I’ll follow up on this post later with some of the rock and mineral collection, got some great Roman coins and arrowheads too for you artifact collectors ;p.

The box immediately left of #3 looks like it could have various beryls, clear topaz and peridot. Bottom right corner of the box is Mica.

What a nice story, so glad you could share your grandfather's passion.
I saw a bunch I can ID, but at some point, you'll have to break them down into smaller lots in the ID section. It'll make it easier.
Welcome from VA.

Thanks all! @rocks2dust the insects are my other hobby, I do some amateur pinning and mounting but those are professional ones I’ve purchased. rockstock wpotterwThanks guys! I’ll follow up in the ID and specimen sections with more photos, the watermelon tourmaline are some of my favorites as well.
