I'm sure a lot of you have seen the sailors cheering their Captain Crozier as he was relieved of command of the USS Theodore Roosevelt. What you might not know is that the ship's namesake did the same thing during the Spanish American War. An epidemic of malaria infected nearly all his troops. He sent a letter up the chain of command and it was "leaked" (probably by Roosevelt himself) to the AP. As a result, the troops were re-stationed to a colder climate with no malaria. Interesting.

Another war w/dubious pedigree. Talk about a bad habit. On the bright side, we learned a few tricks in the Philippines that would come in handy later. for Crozier, btw. That cheering mob was like a big FU to the pentagon.

How many lives did Captain Crozier save by going through the chain of command?

If I was in his position, I might have acted the same. The military has it's own rules and values. Embarrassing your superiors and drawing attention to yourself is not appreciated even when the behavior is beneficial.

As a Navy brat, a Navy wife, a Navy mother and now a Navy grandmother, I know full well what the chain of command means. I also know that those ships are floating cities and a perfect storm for an infection. I have no doubt that Capt Crozier tried to get help and got no results. I also suspect that he knew he would lose his job. But, to all the families of all of those people he is a hero.
And, yes it was a big middle finger to the Pentagon. Wouldn't be the first time a sailor did that. FTN.
ETA-- BTW- Crozier has tested positive for Covid 19.

Maybe the Squids shouldn't have made a port of call in Vietnam on March 5th......!!!

Old navy saying; loose lips sink ships. I really don't fault the captain for his actions. The whole situation was handled badly given the global circumstances. He should have been given a pass and not fired. The actions of the secretary of the navy were far worse. A person who has reached that level of authority should know when to keep their mouth shut. He must be a complete jerk and got fired.

This whole thing is a shit storm. It is pretty clear to me that the flag officers and senior civilians in the Navy dept need to be ruthlessly purged. It is also pretty clear to me that will not happen. Time to duck my head and collect my check. I would discourage any young person from serving such a corrupt government.

Although this pandemic was likely caused by accident it starts to read like a futuristic horror story where the military will need to function wearing equipment to protect against biological contamination. Social distancing wouldn't work. Biological warfare is turning into a terrifying economic weapon.

This will get worse before it burns itself out. One of the sailors from the TR died. Fair winds and following seas.

They’ve been floatin’ that for a week or more but . . . The Pentagon has deferred a decision about the future of an aircraft carrier captain who was relieved of command after he raised concerns about the Navy’s handling of a sprawling coronavirus outbreak on his ship, defense officials said Friday.
The delay comes after the Pentagon’s chief spokesman, Jonathan Rath Hoffman, told reporters earlierin the day that senior Navy officials would brief Defense Secretary Mark T. Esper about an inquiry into what happened with the USS Theodore Roosevelt and its former commander, Navy Capt. Brett Crozier.
Several defense officials said they expected a conclusion to be announced afterward. But as the afternoon wound down, the Navy acknowledged that no decision was forthcoming. Two people familiar with the issue, including one senior defense official, said administration officials wanted more time to review their options.
IOW, they haven’t heard back from Commander Clorox yet.

Some screwy stuff happenin’ on that boat. WASHINGTON (AP) — Eight more sailors aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt have tested positive again for the coronavirus, raising to 13 the number who appear to have become infected a second time while serving aboard the sidelined aircraft carrier.
All the sailors had previously tested positive for the virus and had gone through at least two weeks of isolation. Before they were allowed to go back to the ship, all had to test negative twice in a row, with the tests separated by at least a day or two.
On Saturday, a Navy official confirmed eight additional sailors had tested positive again. A day earlier the Navy had said in a statement that five had tested positive a second time.
