Hey, check out my enormous wood!
Since it was said that I Didn't go big enough with my "scale" tumble and no one has done a mondo Petrified wood yet i decided to take a crack myself. I am starting it off with a video because it is easier for me to make a good focused video than fifty bajillion pictures. This pet wood is from the coastal plains of Texas, i am not sure where i grabbed it from though. It is in the 3lb Lortone with 30gr and the pictured stones. Due for a check-in 06/14/2020

Looking forward to seeing the result of this one.
You may want to change the title of your thread, though. My mind went right to the gutter!

The video soundtrack made me sleep with my gun. Some interesting dancing demon sound effects for sure. Fine piece of pet wood. Decided to go lite on the adjectives describing the wood...

I sleep with several guns nearby! Nothing like grizzly country or Atlanta to learn you that one.

I thought the screeches were supposed to be be bird tweets, but i guess the get more surreal as the track progresses

the pet wood continues to tumble, I will probably try to gather some agate gravel for round 2.

ok, so it rolled unmolested for 14 days and... ....Got cleaner that is pretty much all these guys will have another go in the 30gr at a later date with a standard assortment. the pet wood is back in the barrel with a load of quartzy gravel and will tumble for at least 1 week. I may lower the water level and add some thickener tonight since the SiC has not been digesting well since I started using 30

I dont think 30grit will breakdown very well in 3lb barrel.

I dont think 30grit will breakdown very well in 3lb barrel. good to know, this means I will just have to do my 30Grit clean outs in a way that allows me to recapture the unused grit.

let us just say, I am over under 'whelmed with the outcome, it is looking like 30SiC will not work, for big tumbles at least, in a 3lb tumbler. I am not sure i wouldn't have gotten the same results out of just rocks and water. there is some slight softening of the edges on the bigg'un but not the dramatic change i was hoping for So i set it up with a tablespoon of 30 and three of 60/90 and 2 scoops of old slurry, all the gravel, and old stuff and a few new rocks and a way they will tumble for probably 2 more weeks

from what I've read anything less than 60/90 grade sic doesnt do so well in 3lb or smaller barrels. even with the large stone. if you want quicker results and have a tile saw you may want to look Into a tuck point blade for pregrinding. can quickly take off outside rind or fracture, pits etc. and cpl weeks in coarse and they are ready to go to next step.

I totally agree with what he said above. Don’t use anything less than 60/90. A 3lb barrel is just to small to efficiently break down the grit.

Pushing the limits of mobility in a 3lb barrel. If continuing, I'd suggest underfill with smaller smalls. I think the biggest I did in a 3lb was maybe 1.5-2lbs and it took a long time to coarse grind with 60/90.

That is a nice piece of Pet wood. But, if it were mine, I'd break it up into smaller pieces and have a go at them. I think pieces about 1-2" would work in your tumbler. I don't think that you will see any big difference after a week of tumbling. It may take months with weekly checks to view the progress, clean and replace the grit, before they are nicely shaped and ready for stage 2. Just my 2 cents.
