Was curious if anyone in the know would be willing to share more detailed directions to the Vistaite jasper location? Was out there today in what i'm sure is the correct location, but just want to verify that I am in fact in the right spot. Thank you.

There is not an extant seam, dike, or other discrete deposit. The original source was on a long-gone mountainside that eroded away eons ago and left pieces scattered on the ridge above Walton Lake. Hoot Elkins and Shirts Quant dug the entire ridge 50 years or so ago looking for any remaining source (never found one), and took all the pieces of any size. Possible that there are a few scattered pieces left, but you are going to have to move a lot of duff and dirt. The only verified finds I know of over the last 20 years have been thumbnail size bits. Some of the stuff being claimed as new vistaite are more like Skaggs blue-green jasper, which isn't the same stuff at all. Don't know if Judy (Hoot's daughter) is still in the phonebook, but she's the only person I know who might recall whether some spots on the ridge yielded more than others. Last I talked with her, she was certain that Hoot and Shirts dug the entire ridge and got everything of any commercial value (some of the little pieces they hauled back were barely cab-size).

I know Judy. I also knew the late quant and hoot. They did a great job digging up that hill side. This post is old and since then, However... I have managed to locate how and where to find vistaite. Original vistaite too, not the new stuff that’s being passed off as vistaite. Thanks for all of the replies. But I got it all under control at this point. Love and respect to all. Happy hounding

Wow - good for you!
If you ever get "too much" of it, I'm sure some of the folks on here would love to have a piece.
The members on here have a true appreciation for materials like that - as shown by all the posts that say "I could never cut that... .".

The only piece that I have been lucky enough to cab. It's beautiful material.

Beautiful cab. I’d love to post some of my cabs. It’s just a bit of a process trying to post pics. Once I get it figured out, I will.

If you are using your phone, you can use an app called Tapatalk, which a lot of members like.
Also, you can host your own images at Flickr or someplace similar and just insert the appropriate code into your post.

Is this vistaite? I found a very small piece that was mixed with morrisonite and assumed it was rogue piece. The surface was smooth and the cabs will ping when hit. The material is hard.
Looks like it.

Yeah, that’s a pretty nice one. I got some nicer ones and larger pieces stuffed away in buckets. I’ll post them when I stumble back across them.

Please do. It's nice to see some of the better stuff. There's been some on eBay, but they are NOT that nice.
