I don't know why, but I've got a strange attraction to this hobby (aka finding and polishing rocks). It's completely new to me.
I also enjoy metal working (machining metal, welding metal, making things from metal - fixing old machines, etc).
I tinker in home audio. Building speaker enclosures - shooting for wide dynamic range & clarity. . . .
What a neat website this is. . . .

Welcome to the forum from Choteau Montana! I enjoy or have enjoyed all of those things myself. Whereabouts in the woods are you?

New image host - testing to see if it works. . . . Oh yes, it works great! Glad you were able to navigate the Cloudinary set up so quickly. So the photo, you have the engine sitting face down? The spline you mentioned is the back of the engine, and would attach to a transmission or transfer case of some kind? Thanks for posting the photo in larger format. I can see why it would be a great conversation starter.

You are looking at the front of the engine. The spline is on the crankshaft (the very center of the engine - as shown). It's where the propeller hub would join to the engine, or in the case of my engine, a large gear - to join the transmission. The spline is similar to what you'd find on an automobile axle, just larger. On the back of the engine there's attachment points (an engine mounts). There's also a 12 volt electric starter - looks a bit like a GM starter. There's to magnetos - one on either side of the starter - resulting in two spark plugs per cylinder. This was done for safety and increased reliability. If one magneto fails, or if one plug fails, the engine continues to run as normal. The chain on the front is not normally there. That's just for lifting. The black pipe with the twin silver tape is the air-inlet. The exhaust discharges through pipes to the rear.
I ended up going with Flickr for the photo-hosting. I reduce the file sizes - to conserve bandwidth.

Welcome to the forums, from the Desert Southwest! And thanks for explaining the airplane engine. I like all things metal I think, and almost everything mechanical. Not sure why. But that would be a nice piece to have in my garage! My only problem would be trying to figure out how to fit it in. Maybe a wall mount.
