Here's a coprolite hunter posing by an old Mormon tea plant.

While not exactly the same, the pattern in that one kind of reminds me of this: Let's hope it's not prophetic... I really got a kick out of that! Reminds me of a typical story line from a 1950's horror movie. Now I might start to be afraid it will unleash some malignant being from inside one that I cut open. A dino poo monster!

TURD TUESDAY The design inside of a lot of these reminds me of blue dragon nudibranchs. Are they desiccation cracks that filled in later?

With many thanks to Randy, we finally cut our first piece of dino poop! Because this was our first coprolite to cut, we picked one of the less interesting looking ones and were still very excited to see inside. I cheated and just took pictures wet, but we will polish this turd up soon. We can’t wait to see what the ones identified as better specimens look like!

Even if the colors are bland, it still had some interesting areas in it. There was even a small red spot that looked like some of the gastroliths you’ve identified. More importantly, the kids loved seeing what it looked like inside! We will work our way up to the others. Some of the smaller ones and the one with the crazy webbing on the outside look like they have great potential.

It will still make some nice cabs that will be jewelry-worthy.

I've been asked what I do with all my "bland" coprolites. If they are larger I make book ends or other novelties out of them. Instead of flat lapping the halves I often spray them with lacquer which gives a nice appearance. I then trade them to rock shops who market them to tourists.

It's not midnight on the west coast, so it's still Turd Tuesday! Here's a couple cabs I made. I finished the wraps today:

I was kind of figuring LED was going to need to be the direction. I'll be looking into trying to get this battery operated, rather than plug in. I'll have to search out the components at some point. Tons on my plate right now...this is on the "to-do" list! I'm going to try and get this done before Randy whips out that sauna though! LOL I finally stole some shots from my old pal who mounted a gem bone slab in a light box. It's back lighted with LED lights and controlled by a wall switch.

Randy, thanks for posting these. It's similar to what I have in mind. I think I might put another three slabs (unknown just yet) into the light box, rather than just the one slab.

This is a fairly average specimen and is probably destined for the tourist novelty market. I thought I shouldn't spoil folks by only showing high grade specimens.
