Hi all, I’m glad to have found this forum, I can see there is a ton of info on here. I’m brand new to tumbling rocks, I haven’t even purchased a tumbler yet. I joined here to do some research and hopefully receive some advice as I venture in to this new found hobby of mine. I’ve always been a rock hound and love combing the beaches for pretty rocks, but I have no idea what I’m looking for or what the rocks are that I like. I just collect the ones that catch my eye. So I’m looking forward to learning how to identify different types of rocks as well as getting started on tumbling. I’m planning on taking a drive up to Lake Superior the week before Labor Day, I have the whole week off. I’m not exactly sure where the best places are to look, but it will be fun regardless. I’m familiar with the Munising and Grand Marias area, I’ve been there a lot - but would like to go west from Munising to explore some new areas. Well I’ve rambled on long enough. Thanks in advance for anyone willing to help point me in the right direction to cool spots to check out and which type of tumbler would make a good one for a beginner. I’ll be doing some searching on this forum, I’m sure most of the questions I have have already been asked and answered. Megan

Welcome from another Michigander. Lortone and Thumlers are good rotary tumblers, we do everything up to stage 3 in rotary. Polishing for us, is done in vibratory tumblers. Lot-O and Lortone vibes both are good units for polishing. Others on this page do far more tumbling than we do, I'm sure they will chime in with great advice also.

Welcome from Northern Arizona!
I'm not a tumbler, but we have a lot of world class tumblers here. Besides reading on the Tumbling board, I'd suggest you watch some of the videos by Jugglerguy. His YouTube channel is Michigan Rocks.

I'm a Michigan rock-nut and love all of our shorelines! If you post some fotos of some of your keepers we can help you ID what you have! For the Upper Penninsula, there's a good Lake Superior rock pickers book. I'll have to look up its title but it has locations and color plates of examples. Welcome!

I will figure out how to post pictures shortly, but it looks like I’ve been collecting a lot of granite.. not so good for tumbling? I’m super excited to have a whole week off next week, pretty much wide open for going anywhere in Michigan. Going to try to find some rocks I can eventually tumble and polish. Would love to know what book that is you’re referring to. I have time to get it before next week via Amazon!! 😀

Thank you for the references! I picked up a couple books during my 2 day trip to the UP. Visited the Gitche Gume museum and gift shop in Grand Marias and the Agate Lady confirmed my daughter found an agate on Vermilion beach as well as my Mom. I purchased a book from her store. The next day I found an agate and my daughter found something pretty bazar and beautiful. I will have to post pictures of it once I figure out how. Tons of beautiful rocks but I forced myself by day 2 to leave the pretty rocks alone and solely search for agates. I stayed mostly on the dry rock bed, into the morning sun. I started to pick up on the chalcedony and quartz type of rocks more easily than by wading through the wet rocks. (I get easily distracted) after 2 days of hounding I have what I'm calling a AGATE-ACHE in my back.. lol I've got the bug for sure. No equipment yet, but a bucket of rocks and just a few precious stones. Went to Whitefish point, just a few miles from where we stayed and picked up a couple more books. I'm not even home yet (stopped in Wolverine and stayed last night here at my aunt's house) and I already want to go back. Thanks everyone for the warm welcome and the helpful references. I promise to show off our cool finds soon! Megan

Here is the Cloudinary Tutorial. It takes a little time to get through it, but follow all the steps exactly and you should be good to upload pictures.

The rocks are just so much more beautiful when wet, so I can't stay out. I do find a lot more agates in the dry rocks though.

Decided to make another run over the bridge yesterday and it paid off with a couple more agates. Petoskey stone hunting the day before yesterday was kind of a let down. Found a lot, but none that were really nice.
