Planning on spending a week in Custer. 2 or 3 days digging for teepee canyon and 2 or 3 walking for fairburns. Will get up there Friday and depart the next Friday.

Not that it's a bad thing. jasoninsd can certainly set you straight, but we did the sightseeing thing a few years ago there. We did five days based in Keystone and Rapid City, and we could have easily doubled our time spent. Many of my avatars, current one included, are from photos I took during that trip. From a visitor's perspective, it's an absolutely beautiful area to see. In fact, had it not been for Covid, the wife and I were considering another trip there. Some of the high points in the region (for us): Custer State Park - the wildlife loop drive. We saw buffalo, pronghorn antelope, deer, wild mules, prarie dog colonies. Unfortunately, shortly after we visited, a fire ran through the area and had a significant impact. It's a beautiful drive, but I don't know how the impacted wildlife and vegetation has recovered. The Rock Shed in Keystone. The train from Keystone to Hill City. Crazy Horse Memorial. Spearfish. The canyon drive, the falls, and the trout hatchery. Mount Rushmore. Deadwood. We don't gamble, but it was an interesting place to see. Sturgis. Had to drive through it just to see it, though it's nothing more than a small town without the motorcycle event there. Red Shirt Table Overlook. Badlands National Park. Art Alley in Rapid City. Those were just some of the high points for us. The drive between those different areas was amazing. Old town Rapid City was great, and we found a restaurant that we liked (Firehouse Brewing Co) where we ate a few times. Have fun there. I'm jealous.

aDave thank you, I have been up there a few times, got lucky and a local clued me in on teepee canyon agates, literally had me in the area he had dug up searching. Will probably take the wildlife loop on the way to search the French Creek campground area. Also plan on heading over to Devil's Tower this trip to see it again and will drive back through Sturgis, Deadwood, Spearfish. And yes a stop in The Rock Shed is necessary.

aDave, I appreciate the long winded list; a lot of great places to check out. I have not been to SD since I was a little kid. I do remember the Flintstones park; just don't remember exactly where it is.

But don't take my word for it, do a quick Google.

So, I know fishnpinball will be posting stuff about his trip later, but I wanted to take a minute and say a big thank you to Norman and Mark! Both of them let me "invade" their rockhounding adventure yesterday! I met them both in the morning out in Farmingdale and was allowed to be given the position of "guide"...albeit with my own caveat expressed that a guide should be able to "lead" towards something! They trusted me in my limited experience to point in the direction of rocks, in the hopes of Fairburns, but I could only promise hard little roundish objects...no specifics promised! LOL We ended up going pretty far out into the West Buttes, rather than over to the more commonly picked East Buttes. It was an absolutely enjoyable day. My first one out since surgery last week. With both of them being veterans from the Navy, I truly enjoyed talking with and getting to know the both of them! A few unintended slides by me down a couple steep hills which I knew were questionable, and my wife's words "don't push it" kept ringing in my head - and I thought, "Too late"! Everything was tolerable until the wheels fell off...almost quite literally! As the day was winding down and we all had said we had had enough "fun" for the day, we were heading out of the Buttes and had just about reached the gate when all of a sudden my truck started pulling drastically to the right. I was so hoping it was just the ruts in the road pulling...but sometimes wishes and wants go unheeded! Yep, it was a flat tire...and not just flat, it was completely shredded! A super thank you to Mark for giving the extra 150 turns on the horribly crappy jack I had in the truck as my guts were screaming at this point! A super thank you to Norman for getting out his jack that allowed us to finish the job of lifting the truck...with only about 15 turns of his jack! LOL Without the help from both of you, I think I'd still be there trying to turn that crappy jack! LOL Even with the "tumbles" down the hills and the shredded tire, nothing could dampen how I felt about the day! It really really was fun to get to know the both of them! I look forward to meeting up again later this week, and hopefully filling a couple 5-gallon buckets with Fairburns and hopefully seeing all the teepee agates you guys are out hounding right now!

Can't wait to see what you guys got for the teepees! Even a little something is more than what I've got right now! LOL I'm thinking it's about 48 hours from now to Fairburns!

It was our pleasure. Mark found another one while cleaning his treasures. He does not have a good camera, so it might be a bit before I get a good picture.

If you're able to get a picture of that one, I'd love to see that one as well! And if it turns out that it IS a Fairburn, I want the title of GUIDE back! LOL
