There is so much drama in this hobby sometimes (Facebook, ugh) and I could use a breath of fresh air. Please share something positive. Could be a fun fact, your favorite piece and why, maybe how you got into the hobby or your favorite experience. Thank you!

My favorite piece has a bittersweet back story. To me it is beautiful, but it's kinda sad, so I don't know if it fits your bill.
In 2012, after the Sandy Hook shooting, I was contacted by a woman who bought a seraphinite pendant from me. She told me that her daughter in law is a teacher in the next town over and that her best friend, also a teacher, was one of the victims. She wanted the seraphinite (Angel Wing) to give to her as a source of comfort. I'm not one to put a lot of stock in crystal healing, but I do know that a LOT of people think seraphinite is very comforting. After she gave it to her, she let me know how precious the pendant is to her and how much it really did work for her. I admit our exchanges made me cry and I was so happy that what little I could do made a difference in someone's life.
We recently lost a cousin. I made one seraphinite pendant for her sister and I'm making another for her mother.

I'm a second generation hounder. Three uncles took me under their wing and taught me about rocks, minerals and fossils... Got hooked in 1962 watching one of my uncles cutting Montana moss agates, so at the age of 7, I had the fever for rocks... Been hooked ever since and now there are third generation hounders coming up in the ranks, with grandkids and nieces and nephews.....

I've posted this before, but I got started "hounding" because I started finding neat rocks in 8 tons of river rock I had delivered to the house for landscaping. My wife and I were looking through some of the very first rocks we were picking out of the pile - thinking they were all some sort of Fairburn. We had to laugh at some of the rocks we had picked out. Anything with a band...some were prairie agates, some were jasper, others I still don't know what they are...but know they aren't Fairburns. I did finally start finding Fairburns in an additional 13 tons of river rock we had delivered, including one of the most beautiful Fairburns I've ever seen! I'll share another "beginning". I hope miket doesn't mind me saying this, but the same exact circumstances and the same person brought us both to this forum! Both Mike and I (separately - and he was well before me) were searching Google for Fairburn agates. Google brought up posts from member jakesrocks (may he rest in peace!). Both of us poured through Jakes posts about Fairburns and subsequently lurked the forum and consequently joined the forum. I don't think either of us knew Jake had passed away in 2017 when we joined the forum. So, while Jake's knowledge about Fairburns (and MANY other things as well) will sorely be missed, it was ultimately because of him both of us were brought to the forum! When I joined the forum, I was mainly interested in hounding and using the forum to get a better understanding of places to hound as well as identifying certain rocks. NOW, I have a Thumler's Model B and a Thumler's UV-18 for tumbling...and to further my plunge down this proverbial rabbit hole, I've gotten the bug to start making cabs, so I got a new dremel (I had one, but needed an excuse to get a bigger and better one! LOL).

jasoninsd nailed it for me- and no, I don't mind! A Google search and a quest for knowledge brought me here. I think jakesrocks would be happy to know that he's the one responsible for the wonderful people-and friends- that I've met on RTH. π

When I was a kid starting out with rocks in the early 60s I had a lot of old prospectors give me beautiful specimens, we lived in a Gold mining town so lots of nice Quartz crystals but even a few nice samples of Gold, a couple of small nuggets and some lovely Gold in Quartz seams. I try hard to pay those kind hearted old blokes back by doing the same with any kids that show any interest in rocks.

I have always loved rocks and nature. My parents were wonderful people and never thought I was odd or discouraged me. They even took me to a local rock shop in New Orleans one day so we could look at all the rocks and shells there. My Dad did the most amazing thing and bought a Raytech Tv5 so we could tumble the rocks I found. My Mom helped me pick out some nice rough pieces that we all thought were interesting. She had a great eye for gems and stones. Fast forward 40 years and I still have that Tv5 and the beautiful stones we bought that day.

My favorite piece? That would be difficult to narrow down.... Too much beauty.
One of my favorite things about this hobby is this board. People are helpful, engaged and friendly.
Iβll give a little personal history later.

Thanks all for sharing the love. I went to a local gem show this past weekend with my dad. I got to add a few neat pieces to my collection and had a great time. Boy was it refreshing to get out of the house- and to see some great specimens
