Re" The "dip." I see no reason that all cabs must have uniform crowns. I think some very beautifully cut stones have curving, undulating crowns that can add to their interest and use in creative jewelry. I always hesitate to destroy what took nature millions of years to create just to conform to an arbitrary fashion standard. Of course mileage will vary depending on individual tastes. Preach! Free form cabs are just as cool if not more Free form carving allows you to work the stone without worrying about those standards

That last cab is a beauty. I'm with Tela -- you can go a bit thinner on it. Thanks Robin! Ok, back to the dremel tonight then...

Agreed that there's no reason you can't use the dip in the cab as a feature. You use a dremel anyway, so what the heck? Opals are carved all the time when you're chasing color bars that dive around.
Do it! You put them in the Lot-O to polish, so it's all good.

Thanks again, Robin. I guess I'll just toss it in the vibe then and see what happens...plus, then I can start working on another cab!

You can always try something else if you don't like how it comes out of the vibe. I think it will look fabulous, though!

I've gotta agree with both of these. At some point the rock's gotta have a say in what happens to it...you just gotta listen to it. "Be the agate whisperer!"

Great work, Mike. This is (at least partially) how I got to a place where I prefer making free-forms... just adjusting to nature (or my inattention) changing my planned cabs. A corollary to the saying, "Life is what happens while we are busy making other plans."

Although some day I'm going to try using templates, people make some pretty sweet cabs with them. We'll see I suppose. 😀
