I am using water based red rouge. Can I still use it for a solder retardant? I'm thinking no because the water would evaporate out, but I don't know.

I don't know. Seems to me that it (the red rouge without the water) would be considered dirt, and something dirty will not solder. Have you tried it on clean scrap? Interesting question.

Interesting question. I don't know either since I'm still using the tube of rouge I bought probably 15 years ago!
I don't believe water-based rouge was around then. I suggest doing what Pat said unless gemfeller or opalpyrexia or someone else who makes silver jewelry knows the answer.

I'm a troglodyte, too, too, Rick. I rarely use any, but if I do I reach for a tube of watercolor paint. Not any color, just one of the iron oxide-based pigments: like yellow ochre, burnt sienna, or raw umber. They're dirty pigments, meaning that they are not dye-based.
Did a (very little) reading on rouge. If your rouge is based on traditional carmine, which is a pigment, then the water evaporating would enhance its effect as a barrier to solder (as Pat points out).

Thanks, y'all! Great article, too.
I had a chunk of red rouge with oil, but for the life of me, I can't find it. When I packed my soldering stuff away- it all went in different directions. So, I had to order more. I just learned there was a water based red rouge, so opted for that.
I'll try it today.

Good to know. Now when I reorder, I think I'll get the water-based. Should be easier to clean up, too.
