I picked this up hounding out at Railroad Buttes here in South Dakota. At first I thought it might be petrified wood. I ran across an auction on eBay for Banded Tiger Iron from Wyoming and it looks very similar, but it didn't have the same colors as this piece. It was only tan and black. So, a google search brought up a bunch of photos, and a lot of them had multiple colors, but a lot on there were wavy rather than straight lines. So, any thoughts as to this being Banded Tiger Iron?

it killer looking rock BIF would have been one of my guesses does feel really dense heavy? I love the colors in this thing! I had to go back outside and pick it up to check the weight/density. It does feel "heavier" than it looks like it should...which would indicate iron. However, I just took our pinpointer (metal detector) out there and it didn't register any metal whatsoever in the vicinity of that rock...which I don't know if it should or not, but I thought I'd try that while I was out there.

Have a picture from the base? It looks like the black or "bands" aren't all the way through and just sporadic color changes, like wood can be. Banded Iron should be more distinguished, a lot of the time

Banded Iron should be more distinguished, a lot of the time If it is, that would seriously make me happy! I was hoping this was petrified wood, but there's so many colors compared to other pet wood I've found, I started thinking it might be the Banded Tiger Iron...

Banded Iron should be more distinguished, a lot of the time I took a couple pics and was posting them at the same time you posted this... LOL I see it doesn't have the same type of banding going all the way through like Ed's piece... how big is your piece how much does it weigh not that you have to that now My chunk is 7" X 3" X 3" thick weighs close to 2lbs I was already doing this LOL! It measures 4"x5.5"x1.25' Weighs 31.79oz (1.987 pounds) It seems "heavy" and "dense" - but it doesn't have the same banding like yours does, where the bands seem consistent throughout the whole piece...

The patterns and colors are consistent with wood, and the shape is also. It's weathered like ancient wood does also
