It looks like Petrified Wood to me. Looks like wood to me, too. I think this is the way I'm leaning as well. After looking at the pic mohs posted of the BIF and looking at the end shot of mine, mine doesn't have the same type of banding. In the BIF it looks like the banding is "layered", whereas the banding in my piece appears more to be on the surface rather than going all the way through the piece...but dang it's HEAVY for the size it is!

anyway jase now ya got me doubting with your banded analysis
I just tried a magnet on my BIF a weak magnet off the refrigerator my stohn is magnetic i feel slight draw
pretty sure wood isn't but it might be there could be some iron in the petrification process nontheless ...

I just checked mine with a magnet and got no resistance. I'm out in the garage, so I figured I'd check it with my multimeter...no conductivity whatsoever...

mohs - hmmmm Here's a couple pics of the end of my piece... The pic on the right and your original definitely seem to show wood grain-like patterns. Pretty piece.

Question: thinking some more about it... is tiger iron even found in the US? I’ve only ever heard of it coming from Australia.

Hmmm, isn’t “high 30s” an oxymoron?

Hmmm, isn’t “high 30s” an oxymoron? Not if you haven’t settled down yet.
