I sometimes use my 6 inch bench buffer to add some gloss to my tumbled Petoskey Stones using ZAM or Fabulustre. I would like to get some better wheels for this. Mine has a 1/2 inch arbor. I have sewn muslin wheels now, 1 inch thick. I find I like the thicker wheels. But those little threads are coming off, making it kind of messy and it has been aggravating me. I took a cabochon class and the instructor talked about felt wheels, can't seem to find any in my size I need. (I have spent hours searching for felt wheels, can't find a source). I am overwhelmed by the choices in buffing wheels, they seem to be available in soft, medium and firm?? Also they talk about ply?? Not sure what is best for using on my tumbled Petoskey stones. When you are retired, that extra money is not there to try a bunch of different types and have them be the wrong thing. So I just thought I would throw this out there and ask for some advice. What would you suggest for my little Buffy (yes, I name my tumblers and other equipment. They are much more likely to behave when you talk to them by name.) I just want to buy one and move on.

petoskeycheryl I had read that felt wheels work good for polishing Jade. I picked one up in a collection and tried to use it. The big problem with felt is that it builds up heat rapidly. With Jade I ran into problems because the jade handles the heat well the dop wax did not. Try polishing the petoskey stone with a little oxalic acid mixed in with your tin oxide. this gives a good polish on calcium carbonate materials (petoskey stone, marble, travertine). I use muslin buffs for most finishing with generous amounts of water. I just put up with the strings. I like polishing on leather best but leather belts stretch and polish pads are not convenient. Hope this helps.
