Mortal Kombat! ... FINISH HIM! Sand it again: 80, 120, 220, 320; sweep it, vacuum it, wet wipe it, conditioner, stain, seal, seal, seal... I've been over the surface of this thing soooo many times. Is a woodworking project 90% finishing the thing?! My goodness! Opted for oil-based products since it gets wet every week from setting rocks out to dry. Black cherry stain - something different than the various shades of golden brown and delicious. I could have gotten away with a small can of that - a little bit goes a long ways. It looks like red tiger's eye, just gorgeous. Used about 1/2 a quart of the conditioner. Conditioned. Stained, not sealed. Probably used 1/6 a quart - could stain an entire bedroom set with what's left. Sealed, 3 coats - took 2 quarts. Satin finish. Shelves inside are stained and sealed too. I'll get a pic of that once I get it back in position. Handy having those fans installed - full on! Gotta find that insulation I want to use and it'll be complete.

That turned out beautiful! You did a fantastic job putting this together and I love the black cherry finish.

As a bit of a wood head I can say JOB WELL DONE!! Not a thing I would have changed! Love your color choice for stain! Just an FYI, the switch you used (the NVR) is the exact same switch on my CabKing cab machine!

Excellent! That'll give you many years of use. It looks really great, too.

I'm reviving this thread just to put the final nail in the coffin. The last bits that top it from 95 to 100% complete, as originally designed. I modded the tumblers with some new feet. These came with the fans I installed and looked like they would be a better solution than the black square things that come glued on. I tried other glue on those, but they never really stayed on. I had to drill some holes to screw these into. They work really well, to the point where it actually dropped the noise down a bit and the tumblers don't walk around at all now. I had planned on installing some carpet padding as noise dampening insulation. There is still airflow between the bottom and top via the sides and the doors. I put the bottom side of the padding facing towards the inside of the cabinet so that my staples could grab the webbing and maybe it be a bit more durable. I went through a few hundred staples. The underside of the top and the shelves have some on them as well. Before putting all that in I wanted to have some before and after sound measurements. I cleared out the cabinet of everything except the tumblers, then set my tripod in front of the tumbler side two feet from the front of the cabinet and halfway down. I marked the location so I could put it back in the same place for an apples-to-apples comparison. Y'know, a fair shot at controlling variables. These measurements are with the same tumbler loadout for the week (not necessarily comparable to my previous measurements with other configurations) and were all taken within a few hours of each other, with the tumblers running the entire time in between. Two QT12's, two 33B's, one 45C, looking at an average decibel reading over 60 seconds. There were mainly four measurements that I was interested in, starting with an empty cabinet: Doors open, doors closed, doors closed w/insulation, doors closed w/insulation w/cabinet loaded with supplies. Doors open: 53.7 dB Doors closed: 41.5 dB Doors closed w/insulation: 40.3 dB Doors closed w/insulation w/loaded supplies 39.5 dB Ouch! In my head I envisioned that the insulation would do more than it actually did. Turns out the 3/4" plywood itself was the real winner here! So, short of insulation designed specifically for noise dampening, it's probably not worth the trouble. That said, 39.5 dB all said and done? Not bad. You can tell they're on, but it's not like you have to project your voice to have a conversation. I wish the dishwasher was this quiet. That wraps up this endeavor. Overall I'm pretty pleased. I definitely use the benchtop every day.
