Those rocks look a lot like the rocks on the mountain here in Huntsville, so I would already have experience with it
I Hope
Cause I just Entered the Contest

Just got mine. Mine are all subdued brick reds, pale yellows, and light greys. There are no whites or stripes or dark colors like some in other photos. The box was almost destroyed by USPS and came inside a plastic wrapper with an apology. I can tell from the sharp edges of the rocks and how they feel that this is hard material. But--thank God--I at first glance saw no obvious pits or rotten spots!

Got my rocks yesterday. Cleaned them for 12 hours in plain water. Now they are rolling for their first 6 days in course.

My rocks are in the mail. The photos above make me think I'm just going to start with several months of rough and see where I am.

Just sent off the entry form. New to the hobby but figured what the heck, sounds like fun. Looking forward to seeing everyone's finished products.

Entered already and received my rocks Wednesday and the look very similar to Wooferhund and lancemountain's rocks. This will be an adventure for me, being new to the hobby and knowing very little about this rock.

Rocks came today... We'll see, I'm trying to decide if I want to tumble the whole batch or just pick out 10 or so that I think have potential. You know, with my years (1 1/2 or so) of experience.

...But--thank God--I at first glance saw no obvious pits or rotten spots!... Well, that jinxed me for sure as I just found out. Should have kept my mouth shut.

Anything is possible. I won the contest the first year I started tumbling and the year after. I will say that I think the competition level has increase every year though. Chuck

Geez, seeing the rough people are receiving... that is just plain mean. Did they select the material by backhoe? I've collected at Burris Creek. Some nice stuff is available, but I'm seeing little of it. paintbiscuit you might have better luck finding fossils (seriously) in the rocks you posted than tumbling them. Good luck, all.

Yeah a couple of those are busts. I think I’ll have at least five that are worth turning in though. However, I’m curious if they judge based on size because it seems like my best looking ones are going to be very very small by the time they’re finished. I don’t have the ability to do any pre shaping so I have to grind through quite a bit of material.

There are a few in mine that I'm sure I'll do nothing with, or maybe just throw in my big model B and forget about. I've just been throwing a couple handfuls of rock in that one every couple weeks for rough, then doing a Lot-O for everything after that. Some rocks stay in there for months. Some of my worry now though is that I'll confuse my contest rocks with others. The biggest ones will stay in rough until June at the least though. I'll either have really good ones, or expensive slurry.

Wow, mine have completed 2 weeks in coarse grind and I can hardly believe how fast they are going. The yellowish stuff is falling apart. The tan pieces seem to be holding up. I don't know if I will have 5 pieces of submit in the end or not. But at the rate this is going I'll probably be done by mid-March. This is really weird because in the other years I could not often get it done at all by the Aug 15 deadline. Maybe the material is softer than usual. I'm still having pieces of last year's material only make it through polish now.
