Oh yes . . . I am keeping my secrets close too.
in fact ... I have said too much already.
I think the most difficult part is going to be giving up 5 of my favorite rocks! A bunch of these are probably junk, but some of them are really interesting.

Congrats on anyone doing great on this. My yellowish material will soon be gone entirely. Almost same with red. I might have 1 reddish black piece make it, and 3 grayish pieces. I was sure wrong about this material being real hard by the sound of it clicking in the beginning. I don't plan on adding the place this came from to my "gosh I hope to collect there someday" list.

I also thought the material to be hard and slow work, but after 2 weeks I was already pulling rocks, and after the 3rd week I pulled all but 2 of them so I would have some stones large enough to be judged. Everything went into Stage 2 last week and the next cleanout is tomorrow.

I am opinionated but I do try to keep it positive regarding the contest because I completely understand what was recently said here about if they sent an easy material that everyone could nail then judging becomes an impossible task. However. I can state with absolute confidence that this was not a Burris Creek issue.

Late to the party so sure I got the bottom shelf hooch: Of all the messages I have read on this forum in almost 7 years, that is my all time absolute favorite. Thank you so much for writing that funny comment! I had not heard the word hooch in decades, but I certainly remember the context and what it means. My grandfather was a lawman, and he used to tell me stories about stills.

My grandfather was a lawman, and he used to tell me stories about stills. Now those sound like interesting times! Although I was jesting, perhaps these rocks aren't so bad at all… I'm actually coming to like a few of these now that some of the layers have been peeled back. Several of the "yellow" ones are showing nice mixes of red and white, though I worry they'll not take a shine. The red ones are kinda "meh" like unadorned red jasper, but a couple of them have nice white underneath. The brown ones… yeah I dunno about those; definitely not feeling it yet with them.

I would definitely trade you what's left of my yellow ones for some real hootch. My grandfather told me it could be hard to tell the taste of the bottom (or was it the top?) stuff from lighter fluid. He helped capture either Pretty Boy Floyd or Baby Face Nelson, I forget which. I live only a few miles from the famous outlaw town of Ingalls, Ok where a lot of the outlaw shootouts took place and stills were hidden and fought over.

My father has lots of stories that make a history buff like me want to beat my head against the wall. Like when he was a kid, he and his brother found a bunch of full bottles of moonshine hidden in a rotting tree. They smashed all the bottles! Then there was the original '61 Springfield rifle (1861 -- you know, American Civil War? which I now have a museum of?)he bought for $25. Fired it a few times, thought, meh, not into blackpowder, and sold it for $25! WHY DIDN"T YOU KEEP IT FOR YOUR DAUGHTER WHO HADN"T BEEN BORN YET AND WHO WOULD ONE DAY BE A CIVIL WAR BUFF/COLLECTOR? ?

As time goes by eventually everyone will attempt to polish Burris Creek Jasper! Some of the material appears difficult. During the past year I have been tumbling extensively and have various polishing material. Has anyone used polishes like Rapid Polish #61, Linde A or M5. Since this is a tumbling competition I would guess competitors would go beyond regular 1200 Grit Aluminum Oxide.

Well, when I started this I think my material filled about 1/4 to 1/3 of a 12 lb barrel. Now it only fills about 1/3 of a 6 lb barrel! I have to write down how many pieces are left and make sure to only tumble with something of very different colors so I can find the contest pieces. I keep expecting to find some pieces gone entirely when I open the barrel and do the rinse. A few are down to the size of a fingernail. I have 2-3 pieces ready for 220, but they don't look that great.

I'm really late to the party as I'm just emailing the form today for the contest, so if anyone will get the hooch it will be me!

It's going to be hard to get 5 good pieces; more likely it will be 4 pieces and a rock that looks curiously like a $100 bill. Going to be tough giving up those few good pieces as well :/

Just filled my barrel extra fine 1200 silicon carbide grit. The rocks should be nice and smooth to polish in a week or so.

Mine are in various stages, but I have one completed and polished rock of the yellow stuff. It took a surprising level of polish. I might've lucked out on that particular rock. It's not perfect, but I'm glad I have one of that variety that didn't grind to nothing or show more pores than a sponge.

They are finally out and I have impressed myself. I think this is the best polish I've ever produced. Will get some pics as soon as I have some good light.
Showed them to some friends and they wanted to touch and hold them. Never realized I could be so sensitive about my rocks.

So here they are ...
The first set is the cool looking Yellow and Red Rocks
Second set is Everything else This last set is all the filler. The Brown Chert polished up fabulously. The glass marbles still look hazy, so I may repolish the Final selections in a 3 pound barrel to get it a bit slicker looking.
Still have cracks and pits but I am completely ignoring that stuff.
