Hello everybody, I have been tumbling 1st creek agate freeform and I found one that with strong backlighting orbicular polkadots can be seen. I started tumbling in my mini vibe 14 first with 80 now 120-200 and it appears that I am revealing more of the pattern as I leave it in the tumbler day by day. My question is, is there anything I need to look for specifically to stop with the current stage and move to 600? I am a total rookie and I am just looking for any anecdotal experience and advice. I am also curious about such orbicular spots on agates I think they are just amazingly beautiful. Can anyone point me toward a reference that might explain it or give it. a shot themselves? Thank you Johnny

Hey Johhny,
I can't explain the hows or whys that create the orbicular patterning, but I know there's people on here who can...
We have a lot of Bubble Gum Agates here in South Dakota which are orbicular. I've collected a bunch of them this summer. I've got some tumbling right now in the rotary and some others finishing up in the vibe. Hopefully they'll be done by the end of the week.
I "want" to get the pits and other blemishes off the stones before pulling them and moving onto the next stage, but I'm willing to accept non-perfect tumbles if it means it's going to save the patterning...

Hello , So from your post I'm assuming that if I leave it in too long I could lose my pattern. Likewise is there a sweet spot of the pattern? It seems theres some material onto of the orbicular spot. Thanks for the reply and God bless yah folks.

I believe it depends on the type of rock and the type of orbs. With Bubble Gum Agates, I know you can grind the orbs away. I believe there is a "sweet spot" when it comes to some material, but each may be different and is just a learning process that comes with experience with the different materials. And God bless you too.

Hello again, still learning the forums interface, tis really not a problem with other no reply I looked hard and it appears from my other agates from red top and first creek orbicular pattern is less common to find and the orbicular distribution inside the agate is displaced in the same "layer" of agate as each other but not through out the agate and I perceive this from observing with a backlight and scrutiny. I do believe I have found a sweet spot. On a side note do people ever do agate swaps on this board? In my experience with fly tying forums a fun event amongst the community was to trade flys we have created. Maybe likewise participants with an abundant of their local 'hounded material might want to swap agate for gate amongst a group of folks for a little fun and material experience. Just a thought. Johnny I'm sure there would be members on here who would jump at that opportunity. I would think the best place to post those would be in the Marketplace section. You might get some people biting on that idea! - Be ready to figure out how to post pics as those would be necessary... Side note - you can use the "reply" to button which is what I'm doing here that way members get a notification of being quoted. You can also "tag" someone by using the @ sign and putting it before their username like I'm doing here: aGates . If you hover your cursor over anyone's name (in yellow) it will display their name with the @ at the beginning.
