Found this guy a while back out on the prairie and was wondering if anyone could venture a guess as to what it is. I'm pretty sure it's an agate, but after that I'm not sure. Of course I picked it up because I thought it was a Fairburn- but unless there's something inside I'm pretty sure it isn't. I suppose it could just be a prairie agate.
Pictures of a couple sides, dry then wet. Thanks!

If we tell you its a fairburn, you won't cut it. But if we say eh, its just a prairie agate, you might cut if and find a princess on the inside. I say its a Prairie Agate and should be cut. Smiles

Can you grind down a nice face and let it tell you what to do? If it was up to me, I'd definitely cut it.

I looked at the pics on my phone and was going to guess possible bubble gum. BUT, having looked at them on the PC, I'm going with a Prairieburn! I am going to go with my gut and say Prairie Agate. I've seen lot of Prairies with that "weathered" look around the bands. I still say tumble or cut...but I'd be leaning toward cutting it right dead-square down the middle. If it's prairie agate, you could tumble both halves. If it's Fairburn, you could face polish the two halves.

Smiles Hehe, you might just be right, Tom. About the first part. But I'm thinking I'm going to cut it when the weather warms up a bit. Thanks for the chuckle!

And if it's a Fairburn, YOU could face polish the two halves. Again.

Welp, I cut it. And nothing. Here's the pics of the inside, plus a closeup of the only Fairburn-ish patterns that I found...

My first thought from the initial photos was a geode/T-egg. It does have some nice patterns. I would say face polish both sides or leave as a specimen. Do you know how common geodes are in the area you found it?

Do you know how common geodes are in the area you found it? There are geodes in this area, but I don't know how common they are, Beth. Good advice, however I already cut it more to see if there was anything else and the pieces were returned to nature.

I would have liked finding that. Then again, I have a better chance finding a Fairbairn (WWII Shanghai fighting knife) than a Fairburn in my area of the world.
