One last update on this stone to show the final shape it took. It's 15.5 cts, 23.5 x 11.8 x 8.5 mm.
I'm just glad it survived... .

Excellent! I was fortunate to score a small box of Boulder opal years ago for a very reasonable price. Someone had started working it and chickened out. Asked me to cut one cab for them from a particular stone and told me to keep the rest. I still have some of the rough that needs to be finished. It is a easy stone to work, and an easier stone to screw up! More water than you think, lighter pressure than you think, and brighter light than you think. It usually behaves pretty good as long as you respect it and don't get too greedy.

Here's a video of Vince's stone. Even the video doesn't do this stone justice because the color floats in the opal and it's impossible to see it all without it in hand.
Now with NO obnoxious neighbor sound!

My darling wife liked this one well enough to add a link to a video of it.
I'm really glad she liked it - because I've probably been even more difficult to live with during the time I was working on it.

That turned out amazing, Vince! I love seeing those colors jump out in that video.

Hah. Crap.
Now I'm really gonna' have to figure out how to save those without audio. Freeware video editor with no real help built into it.
I tried a couple of times to save it as video only, but finally just gave up. Didn't even think to play it with sound up because my box is always muted.
This was a nice quiet neighborhood until a couple of years ago... .

Couldn't stand it any longer. Did some very cautious cleanup on this one. These pics aren't in sunlight, so not as "flashy" as the first round.
They do show that the multi-color flash is still there, chips are gone from the surface, and only one shallow inclusion remains. Had to stop again at this point to make sure I didn't get so fixated on one thing that I might do something dumb in another area.
Thanks for looking.
You made an opal with little color look like a million bucks. Awesome job. I like the blue in that and I know red is more popular from reading. (Did I just say I read? That wasn't supposed to get out.)

Thank you.
Robin and I both read Paul Downing's books back when we started cutting.
That piece of rough stayed in a jar for 12-1/2 years - until I finally figured I could cut it without killing it. I'll probably never get another one like it.

Thanks, Brian.
Just this evening I told the guy who got me started that "I think I finally passed my test.". He's been cutting for over 30 years, and he agreed... .
You're welcome to stop by and visit this rock any time. We live just around the corner from where we made that Bruneau deal.

Had a chance to spring this opal on Rockoonz yesterday. He's a guy who's seen a lot of rocks, so I wanted to get his opinion. Had some good late-morning sun, so the stone was showing as well as it could.
It was fun to let someone else from the RTH see the stone in person. He can tell you if he wants to, but I was happy to see he liked it.
It was good we had some fun early in the day. Spent the rest of the day dismantling a big "home-built" saw... .

Definitely an eye popper, whoever you got that rough from, I doubt they would have let it go if they could have seen what you got out of it. And yes, seeing that was the best part of my day. Did you keep a count on how many times I said "interesting" as we pulled that saw apart?
