Nice bees, Stephan! I remember trying to get a decent photo of bees a few years ago and quickly realized those busy little bees were constantly moving.

Thought it would be appropriate for a rock and mineral show and tell...........!
Not a well defined Macro.......but a Macro just the same.........
Taken a few years ago prior to my purchase of a DSLR, with a lens attachment to my LG Tribute cell phone, only photoshop was a crop....:
Took pic when Gold prices started to rise......It's my wedding band we had custom made 35yrs ago........from 5 gold nuggets I harvested (back in 1983) while visiting friends who live near the Bighorn Mountain Range, Powell, WY......they went to school at and work for Northwest College and still live their today. I keep in touch with them, but haven't been back there since 1998.........we recently chatted about those nuggets, the days we spent hunting and panning, and COVID........and what those nuggets must be worth now.........lol. I've only worn that ring occasionally over the past 10yrs, it was getting to beat up.....and now worth to much to even consider........plus the emotional value aspect.

pizzanoLove the ring and the story. I spent some time camping in the Bighorn Mountains near Powell in the 1990's. We did some gold panning in a small creek. Found a lot of black sand and a few tiny nuggets.

This is a great idea for a sticky in my opinion. Makes me wish that I had kept the last of my cameras which I sold, as my phone does not handle macros at all.
Great material here!

That being said, what is the actual difference between a macro and a cropped photo? Is "macro" being used as a generic term for a close up shot?
Edited to add: Also, any objections to me moving this to the general photography section? It's currently posted in rock tumbling photos and the subject matter is clearly evolving to include many other things.

Macro shots tend to have more detail when zoomed in closely versus a different non-macro lens that is then zoom cropped. The detail is all in the lens - a great lens can take a photo from a foot away, and then be crop zoomed in post-editing and made to look similar to a macro photo. However, a macro lens photo taken inches from a subject can pick up more fine detail within the focal range than a non macro lens. Others might explain this much better than I.

That explanation works great for me thanks. All I have to work with is the Galaxy S20U which was supposed to be the bee's knees of cameras but honestly I hate it. I want my old S7 back lol.

The technical definition of a macro is any photo where the image of the subject on the camera’s sensor is equal to or greater than life-size. Typically the ratio is between 1:1 and 10:1. For greater ratios, a microscope is usually needed. With modern cameras, one can often get high res photos that can be blown up to resemble macros. I assume this thread, while sticky, will not be “stickler-y”.
