Love this stone and torn between it's orientation. Red up or down? What do you think?

Your lighting may cause the response to bias, but the first orientation (red up) says beautiful to me. Candidly, the red down looks like sedimentation.

Sideways? My brain is telling me their is a red fish swimming among bubbles rising to the surface. Otherwise, I agree with the red color up as it gives a more positive sense of motion or direction. Flames reaching for the sky rather than being snuffed out. Edit to add: that is a beautiful cab!

I like the red on the bottom. I like to see heavier visual elements on the bottom, plus it looks like it is bubbling up through the marcasite.

I think I would like it better with the red part down. The best way to decide would be to see a picture of the stone side by side in that first picture you posted.
Great stone!

Count me in for red down. It seems like a more natural position to me.

Given your dramatic pendant design sketch, I think that a viewer's attention will be pulled to the top of the pendant. That's really the focal area, so I think that it should feature the smoky red to contrast with the circular cutout.

Red down is most dramatic.

So 3 up, 4 down, and 1 sideways. Lol, hardly the consensus I was hoping for!
Sideways would work but that means coming up with a new design for the back plate. Stay tuned

Stay tuned Make it another vote for down. When I look at that pattern with the red down, the red just seems to be "whisping" upwards...like a gentle red fiery smoke rising through the night sky.

When it is difficult to decide, then either answer is fine. That said, my vote is red on the bottom. I'd try to put words around why, but I couldn't compete with Jason's poetic description.

another vote for down. a picture tells a story so the red on the bottom indicates movement.

Thanks everyone for your input. In the end my wife decided it is a keeper, red side up. She's happy..I'm happy😉

I love how the marcasite blends in nicely with the metalwork! It looks fantastic!

That is one very well designed pendant! I really like how your texturing mirrors the marcasite, how the stone almost seems suspended by the circular wire, and your decision to use a hidden bail.

Thanks for the feedback. It is the first time I went the hidden bail route. I could not see any way around it. I have to say that it still amazes me to see the solder flow between such a minuscule joint!
