The last pictures are Oak for sure, and the first ones are most likely oak.

These two unfinished cabs are both Stinking Water cabs. The need to get back out in the shop! Been laying on computer desk way too long!

woodman In your Oak identification above, of the slab pictures, which lines are the tree rings? In the last picture especially there are stripes that run almost horizontal on the photo and then another set of stripes that run almost vertical. Which set would be the rings? I feel like one set of stripes must be caused by how the wood petrified like filled cracks or something and I’m assuming these are the brighter/lighter stripes. The first photo doesn’t have this two-directional stripage, it’s a little muddier but it looks like the bright stripes go along the grain or along the rings.

In your last photo, the bright lines are rays, most Oak have them. the growth rings are 90 degrees to them. A super macro cameras setting should show the rings and cell structure.

Interesting woodman Thank you. I will need to look up these rays to learn more about them.

In this photo of SW Oak, the rays run vertical and t4he growth rings horizontal. Looks just like a lot of the oak furniture I've seen.

orneryboi Did you happen to get any pics of the rough before you slabbed it? On this batch I did not... I'm usually pretty good about the before and after pics but I got a bit overzealous on these:)

woodman Oh, right, right, right! "In a transverse section they appear as radiating lines from the centre of the log." Duh. Didn't cross my mind just looking at small pieces of petrified wood. But, definitely I now get it. That's cool. I had been thinking they were a result of the aging and petrifying time period. This is neater, helps to more visualize the tree when looking at even a small piece of petrified wood.👍

This photo of a Stinking Water Oak round shows the rays. Oak is not the only wood with rays and not all Oaks have them. I believe that this is from a limb.

Here are some faintly visible rays in a twig cross section embedded within a coprolite.

Some of my pet wood collections: About five to six inches wide. Seems to be agatized as a whole? One small piece on the left side fell off and I will tumble the small piece to see how it will look. This one is quite colorful and I hope to face polish it one day.

I think both are worthy of at least a polished window somewhere.

Believe it or not. This is Swartz canyon oak. Been slabbing this piece up. There was a section of this piece that was agatatized and this was the result.
