Nate and I spent some time in Nevada visiting our daughters last week. While there we spent some time rock hounding near Lake Mead Funny story- 4 wheel drive is highly recommended. As this is some interesting terrain with an approximate 20ft drop into the wash, which leads to the area we needed to get to. Well we ended up driving a Hyundai elantra, which is not a 4 wheel drive. Nate took us off road in it anyways and we made it down the was relatively easily. As we were driving past some hikers, they stopped, stared, mouth agap and one of them asked HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE? He's a professional ladies. I will add some pictures once we get some of this in the saw

Glad you two had fun.
If you're ever down this way with an extra day scheduled, maybe we could arrange some rockhounding around here. (3-1/2 hours from the Strip.)
If nothin' else, it would be fun to meet y'all - and we could at least hook you up with something from the rockpile out back... .

What an awesome trip! I have to thank Ali for putting up with me. There was some... Ummm... Confusion with the rental car agency that rubbed me the wrong way. Got it straightened out and we were on our way. Need to also thank NevadaBill for pointers to hounding sites. Hopefully covid is squelched next time and we can meet ๐ค Finally got the boxes open last night. 3 LFRB sent home ~100# of goodies ๐ We'll probably get at least one piece in the saw today. I believe a few hunks we picked up will work for the March cab challenge. hummingbirdstones hummingbirdstones2 Vince & Robin although this time was about seeing family with a little rock hounding mixed in, if we knew you were that close we definitely would have made plans to meet. Next time for sure! jasoninsd it's amazing what can be done with a rental car ๐

Looks like you had a lot of fun! I canโt wait to see what the rocks like that shown in the second photo look like when they are cut up.
Rental cars can certainly do a lot more than our personal cars can. Iโm quite confident of that. My favorite rental car story involves getting directions from the rental agent to fjord a river in their rental car. ๐ฎ

Here's some quick pix of the 3 boxes we sent home. Most of this is from the ore car mine area, a few pieces were from another area NevadaBill told us about. When we were leaving we realized we were on the wrong hill in the area Bill gave the info for so we planned to go back. Ended up running out of time and didn't get there again. Next time for sure! And here's the inside of an end cut I'm attempting to use for the monthly cab contest. More to come another day...

Looks like you had a great time Ali! This is some old stomping grounds of mine and it looks like you picked up some nice Agate when there!
Used to be that 75% of the time you would see nobody at the claim, or anywhere near all day. Now that the hiking has opened up in the back of the canyon I have been surprised to see that the area is swamped by folks, especially on the weekend.
I am a little saddened that I was not willing to make the trip with you. But it looks like you found the good stuff anyhow! Great work!

Fun! I once took a brand new rental PT Cruiser with like 200 miles on it from San Jose down to Tucson AZ then out to 4th of July Butte rockhounding. By the time I took it back it was completely covered in thick desert dust in every nook and cranny ... and it had like 3600 miles on it haha.
