Long story short bot a couple of slabs off etsy from buyers with high ratings.
1) Dimensions were "at widest point" which I assumed length and/or width not diagonal. 2) Pictures were obviously "enhanced for color" 3) Thickness was the Thickest part of the slab not the thinner edge on otherside of taper.
Yeah I could raise all kind of noise but I am just going to suck it up to lesson learned and move on.
Now for the requested insight.. What do you do with a tapered slab? Thick edge is 5mm and tapers down to 3mm
Thanks, Steven

With a tapered slab, I hope there is a good pattern in the center so the difference between the edges isn't as great. It is always a good idea to contact the seller rather than sucking it up. A good shop wants happy customers. With rare exceptions the only Etsy seller I buy slabs from is Altamont and he has a good selection of slabs at at a reasonable price and has a lot of good pictures that show the defects. I made one other purchase paid too much.
I buy most of my slabs from ebay, blairrocks and full-moon on facebook. I also buy from Roy and Tony. I try to have good friendly relationship with ebay sellers I have bought from. Ask questions including about material that a seller hasn't listed or their opinion of a piece that is listed. With a few exceptions, Etsy is not a good place to buy slabs; too expensive.

One of the problems I have is visualizing what will fit on a slab with big pictures and small slabs. When something is small and expensive I copy the picture and use paint to reduce it to actual size.

Even though your question is directed at the use of the slab, it's hard not to address the first issue brought up...
I would definitely be addressing the thickness issue with the seller. It should have been listed as "Tapered from 5mm to 3mm". The diagonal measurement is a sneaky little trick also done by TV manufacturers...
I think some of your options with the tapered slab is to take preforms from the thicker side...or make your girdle 2mm and have a very low dome...or study up on doublets...

I know the issues of which you speak, but I don't think I have ever had one measured diagonally. That's just a crappy thing to do. I would call them out.

So I did contact the seller and lodged the complaint. They admitted no wrong doing and stated what wasn't covered in the description should have been obvious in the pictures. That being said they did refund the one tapered slab and told me to just keep it for my trouble.
Thanks for your all for nudging me to address it. caveat emptor

And you got a free doorstop for your troubles.

Good on you calling them out. I get the diagonal measurement thing, but it would have been nice if they made that clear (nobody would think less of a seller if they stated the facts). The thickness issue should also have been clearly stated. When I lost stuff on fleabay I'm sure to list all the known issues. I want people to be happy and aware. As for variable thickness slabs, well it takes some practice, but you can can them to an even stone. As long as you work the thicker side heavier, and make sure to draw a girdle line so you know where to work down to.
