Hey guys, sorry I haven’t posted in a while Life... I’m still licking rocks!
I’ll be traveling to Cody Wyoming in a few days-staying a week, traveling to Big Piney for another week then back home. Anyone have any insight on Rockhounding in the surrounding areas?

Hi there!
If you'll still be in the Big Piney area June 18th - 20th, the RMFMS is holding their annual convention during the rock show there.
Everyone tries to bring their best inventory and there are lots of special displays and competitions. Our club hosted the convention in 2019.
Have fun on your trip!

Supposedly Manville has Fairburns but that's about 4 hours from Cody and I've never hunted there. Here's a good link for types of rocks you can find in Wyoming, though... www.wsmgs.org/jsn/2019-05.pdf

I'm assuming you will be going to the Blue Forest to collect some petrified wood, but if not, be sure to go out there. Super close to Big Piney. A couple years ago, I stayed in Cody for a bit. I accessed the Shoshone River trail and poked around on the gravel along the banks and found some nice banded agates. Watch for bears! Supposed to be some goodies out on Heart Mountain, a bit east of Cody but I haven't made it there yet. And some type of ice cave in the vicinity IIRC. I get some nice slabs from Stone Age Industries in Powell...maybe worth a look at their shop? Jim Gray has a good shop in Marbleton as well. Have fun!

I am actually planning to head to the blue forest this weekend. It looks like the blue forest is just over an hour south of Big Piney.
From what I have read, most of the good stuff is buried, so you will need a shovel and probe.
I have heard there are all sorts of goodies in the river bottoms of the Green River-
If you want to venture further out, there is some volcanic features to the East/South of Farson & Eden where you can find semi-precious gemstones.
The Boars Tusk, and the Leucite Hills are looking quite interesting.
Watch out for the wind and bring lots of water-
Have fun.

I just got back from the Blue Forest area - 90's and some gusty winds... we brought a shade structure which made digging bareable.
No luck digging for 4+ hours so I will have to do more research / ask for tips.
However, there are heaps of pet wood and botryoidal-grape agate all over the general BF area sitting atop the soil; so depending on what you are looking for, it might be worth it.
There are also very interesting cobbles that have been sculpted by the unrelenting winds.
I will try to post some pictures later today.

Yeah. Some good stuff around there. Along the North Fork of the Shoshone west of Cody you can find some decent agates and some pet wood. Right now it will be in runoff so be careful wading or anything. Carry bear spray, the big brown pigs will be out. The river is closed to fishing from the lake to Newton creek until June 30 but that shouldn't affect you.
If you get to Thermopolis stop in at the rock shop there. They can give you more pointers. I'll write with more later when I get a chance.
