I've spent quite a bit of time learning about the different types of crypto crystalline quartz and trying to identify rocks I find. I'm no expert but I figured I'd post a quick pictorial guide to help the new hounds out there. Chalcendony- translucent with minimal inclusions. Agate- translucent with bands or patterns or inclusions. Jasper- opaque with bright colors or bold patterns. ( my local jaspers may not be the best examples ) Chert- opaque in various colors and mild distributed patterns. Tends to be harder than the other quartzes. Flint- opaque mild colors, very chippy. Tans, browns, greys and black are most common. Feel free to add more examples everyone.

I'd knew of flint but had not looked into what it looked like yet. I think I have that. Thank you!
I think I'm finally seeing what you mean by bands in agate (I think). I believe I actually see them in the clearish one in the middle. Thank you so much!!!

Thanks Jason! It's good to be back. I've been working a lot and also got distracted by a ridiculously fun video game I found. I've still been hounding and tumbling though. I'll put up some posts of the goodies. Hi Katie. Sorry about the low quality pictures. The lighting was poor for pictures. I created the post as quick guide until I can spruce it up. There are 2 really good agates to google that have great banding. Search for Botswana agate and Lake Superior agates. Most of my own agates are what's called moss agate. They're chalcendony that's filled with little mineral sprigs and sprays. On the flint, it's basically just a jasper that doesn't ussually have much color. Knappers use it to make arrowheads and knives and such.

I like them! I'm going to have to look them up too. I love that there is so much variety out there. Currently I have a desire to hunt for some Boley agate or some of the Crater of Diamonds agate. I just have to get off my lazy butt and get out there in the heat and bugs

Nice display & info! This is piece of chalcedony I found and photographed thousands of posts ago. I found it in NorthPhoenix -19th ave & Deer Valley Rd – approximately. . The photograph is a bit off. But its pretty pure white with a blue tinge!! That really cool! I was real proud when I found it. then found out that its pretty common. Ed

They sure are pretty I'm sure there's a "technical" name for them somewhere out there. I do know the Fairburn Agates that have all white fortifications are commonly referred to as Ghost Fairburns around these parts.

Think it is And it is a bit ghostly Wish I could say I hounded the ammonites! But that would be a fib the mohs cannot tell a lie m stly

Hey that's a nice piece of ghost agate Mohs The white banded stuff is pretty rare. I need to post up some of the stuff I've found and tumbled these past couple months. It's been very rainy here so the creeks and rivers are hard to get into safely but I did manage to sneak a trip to the Ladonia fossil park on a dry day. I looove the quartz and chalcendony there.
