Hi all! I got a bunch of these opals, the seller said they have a layer of cellophane on top. I've never seen opal with this layer on it, would anyone know how to go about cabbing/finishing them? Thank you in advance!
Do they have a thin transparent covering to hold the small pieces together? Cellophane tape? They are very thin and almost certainly would need a backing (doublet treatment), but I'm thinking out loud and you need more expertise than I can offer. Its hard to envision polishing them if they are covered with an extra layer of
Tom Combining bicycles, trailbikes, hiking, and rockhounding as a justification for enjoying the fresh air of New Mexico.
That looks like Spencer Opal material that has been glued to a basanite backing and lapped down to a thin, flat surface. Then you glue a quartz cap on top and make a triplet. The black backing serves to enhance the color of the ultra-thin opal.

rockhobbyguy: I am very heartbroken to hear Lortone is going out of business. My motor on my 45c just went out and needs to be replaced. Since theses are now seemingly unavailable for good, does anyone know of another brand of motor that would work with a Lortone 45c.
