So I started off with a load of cheap rough, I now have some lumps of empty matrix, some small but nice heavily included rock, some smaller bits of clear cystal, some really nice mintygreen opaque rock and.......some rock that started off green and is now a very pale almost white washed out green color, so...where did the colour go, and why did it go, is the rock that pourous as to allow the product that made it green (is it copper?) to be washed away in soloution? Do love the minty green stuff with the various shades of green swiled into it though. Cheers.

I too love that "minty green". Emerald, being a beryl, is found in many shades. I have been faceting some of the washed out emeralds, and some of the white ones. Aquamarine, also a beryl, is clear for the most part. The most coveted emerald, although I prefer the "mints" is clear. I have found that either cabbing, or faceting they clear up to a very definate degree. Also, the sheen of a polished emerald is different to chrystalline. The black which is in a lot of emeralds is carbon. This grinds off quickly and leave voids which require longer primary grinds. I did a 48ct gonzo facet from one of the "second" emeralds I got in one of the Ebay parcels. Once faceted it became quite valuable, once set, wow. I never liked clear emeralds, I have a 6mm sq., which I rarely show customers. I show them the tumbled emeralds. Definately keep the small crystals. They facet nicely and really enhance a piece.
