Hello everyone Finally took some time to look around the forum and WOW! What a wealth of information there is here. I have been tumbling for a couple yrs but in past 6 months or so really getting interested in cutting and polishing. Most everytime I search for a answer to a question I have online I usually end up here and find exactly what I was looking for! Also really enjoy the FB page! Have lived in "the gem capitol of the world" over 40 yrs and cant believe I didn't pick up the hobby sooner! Better late than never tho 😃

Welcome to the site. At first I thought we have a member from Idar Oberstein but then I saw the Western N.C. under your name. why is it called the "the gem capitol of the world" Haha yeah my immediate thought was also Idar Oberstein so I had to google it and they declare the gem capital of the world to be Franklin NC. Welcome lapitup

Funny how cities/communities/states can self proclaim to be the biggest/baddest/best this or that in the world, and no one questions them on it. Funnier (and perhaps sadder) yet, is that people will accept and believe whatever you tell them.
I'm not a fan of self-aggrandizement. And I just plain don't care.
Anyway, welcome to the forum. You'll like it here, lots of info, and many of us will actually say what we are really thinking!
This is not meant to be a stab at you, just laughing at the pretentious powers that be in Franklin, NC. Everyone knows Idar Oberstein is the real "Gem Capital of the World," lol. Sort of like San Diego calling itself "America's Finest City."

Sort of like San Diego calling itself "America's Finest City." While Idar-Oberstein is amazing, I'm not sure where the "gem capital of the world" is. Certainly Bangkok would be a major contender in the "fine stone" category, but Mogok, Myanmar and Ratnapura, Sri Lanka would also be in the race. And the diamond people would put forward cutting centers like Antwerp, Belgium; Tel Aviv, Israel and many others, not to mention worldwide producing areas like Africa, Canada, Australia and Siberia. Opal fantatics like me would point to Australia and Brazil. I think it depends on what kind of gem one has in mind.

What? San Diego is not "America's Finest City." Maybe used to be, 60 years ago. I'm maybe twenty minutes away from there, stay away as much as I can, except to visit my dad. You can't beat the weather here, but you do pay a sunshine tax. Very expensive to live here, and too many rules. The numbers of homeless have really gotten out of hand. Liberal policies, and handouts for people that either can't work, or won't work. A lot of people living in cars. There's this one couple, living out of a Toyota 4Runner underneath the Hwy 125 bridge over Elkelton Place. They'll stay several days at a time, generally until they get run off. Stacking all their crap on top of and around their vehicle, so they have room to sleep inside. When they leave, a hazmat crew has to come out and clean up after them. Last week I went past there to go to Costco. There was a Caltrans crew in their protective gear, ten people, easy. There was a trailer with a portapotty on it for the worker's use, and a truck or trailer for hauling off the trash. As I came home less than an hour later, the CT crew, portapotty, and trash were gone, and the couple was just pulling up in their 4Runner, setting up camp again. Lather, rinse, repeat. A never ending cycle. This is the type of stuff that is the norm now in America's Finest City. Ha! Sorry, got carried away. Say the word, I'll delete this last bit.
