Now that Lonnie's has closed, does anyone in the Valley know of a supply house that sells investment and other smithing supplies?
A friend who is a goldsmith was just over and he asked if we knew of anywhere around here. He used to get his supplies at Lonnie's.

Basically, he's getting low on investment for casting and was looking for somewhere he can drive to to buy more when he needs to. He does a lot of casting and with Lonnie's closed he was at a loss for where to get some without ordering it. Shipping on boxes of investment is astronomical -- they're heavy! Plus I'm sure he'll have a need for other jewelry making stuff on occasion.

S&J's has investment, so he should be good with that. Tucson's a bit of a drive from Chino just to buy investment.

i suppose but I don't even know what investments are ? and now that i;m retired done wish I had learned ha Investment is kind of like plaster of paris. It's what is used to pour around your wax that you want to cast into a piece of jewelry.
The process simplified goes like this: Make your wax model and sprue it (connect it with wax wires so the molten metal can get in) to the base of your metal casting flask. Fill the flask will investment (the powder investment that is mixed with water). Let it set and then burn out the wax in a "burn-out" oven (kiln). When the wax is burned out, then you cast the molten metal into the flask, the metal fills the void left by the burned out wax and you have your piece of jewelry.

Right on hummingbirds ! The ancient Greeks would bronze cast their metal ramming spear on the prow for their triemes. Done on the beach using the lost wax method well that what I read one time probably in an encyclo hope your friend as success heave metal shell cast...
